An English Silver-Hilted Hunting Sword London Silver Hallmarks For 1742, Indistinct Maker's Mark I·S, Possibly Of James South II With tapering blade (minor old rust patination) fullered over most of its length along the back and double-edged towards the point, the forte on one side etched and gilt with crowned 'GR' cypher above two running boar in a landscape against a ground of whorls, and on the other with royal arms and motto above a similar scene of two stags pursued by two hounds in a landscape, hilt cast and chased with shells and foliage against finely punched grounds, centred on a 'Green Man's' mask on the downbent shell-guard and on the back of the pommel, the latter with button and fluted extension down the back of the natural buckhorn grip, quillon-block with a lion-mask on both sides, rear quillon formed as a male head, and knuckle-guard with a human mask between foliage on each side, in later scabbard covered in black leather with foliate engraved silver locket and chape, the former inscribed 'LOXHAM AT YE ROYAL EXCHANGE' on one side 65 cm. blade Footnotes: Cf. another example sold in these Rooms, Antique Arms, Armour & Modern Sporting Guns, 24 November 2021, lot 46; and a related example in the Victoria & Albert Museum, in Howard L.
