An English Silver-Mounted Dagger The Hilt Circa 1700, London Britannia Silver Mark, Maker's Mark Of The Chebsey Family With later bright broad double-edged blade (scattered areas of pitting) of slightly hollowed flattened diamond section with rectangular ricasso, hilt comprising fluted quillon-block with quillons cast and chased with foliage against finely punched grounds, vertically recurved circular tips each with a flower-head on both sides, moulded basal mount with engraved foliate border, reeded pommel-cap en suite, and faceted agate grip of tapering circular section, in its black leather-covered scabbard (some damage) with foliate engraved silver locket and chape (damaged) 37 cm. blade Footnotes: For information regarding William Chebsey I and his sons William II and George, see Leslie Southwick, London Silver-hilted Swords..., 2001, pp. 68 and 69 This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
