A Rare Pair Of 50-Bore Flintlock D.B. Box-Lock Pistols By Barbar, London, Birmingham Silver Hallmarks For 1780, Maker's Mark Of Charles Freeth With turn-off cannon barrels numbered from '1' to '4' at the breeches, border engraved octagonal breeches numbered to correspond, border engraved actions each signed in capitals on a foliate rococo scroll over both sides, and with sliding cut-off lever engraved with trelliswork on the left, border engraved ring-neck cocks and steels, sliding trigger-guard safety-catches each engraved with a flower-head in a diamond-shaped panel on the bow, figured rounded swelling butts inlaid with silver wire scrollwork and rocailles, silver butt-caps each cast and chased with foliage, and silver escutcheons each engraved with owner's initials 'JP' (some old wear and rust patination), Tower private proof marks (2) 9.4 cm. barrels Footnotes: Provenance The Penrose Collection Probably retailed by James 2 Barbar who was apprenticed to his father in the Gunmakers' Company in 1747 For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
