A George III mahogany and crossbanded signpost barometer by John Whitehurst, Derby, c1760. The engraved silvered rectangular scale inscribed "Whitehhurst Derby", the rectangular crossbanded case surmounted by a shaped pediment with gadrooned edge, circular cistern cover below has been damaged, lacking some sections of vnneer. Born in Cheshire, England in 1713, he was a clockmaster, scientist, geologist and member of the Lunar Society. Only 11 from 25 have dates, 4 barometers are untraced and one has been lost, this one could well be an untraced one!

A late 18th century alarm clock by Whitehurst, Derby, the 6" / 15cm silvered dial with black Roman numerals, and brass alarm hand, minute track and diamond shaped five-minute markers, crown wheel escapement, chiming on a bell, wrought metal bracket for wall mounting, the back plate stamped '66::11', in a later oak veneered long case, with pendulum and bob on hook and spike chain, two small lead weights and pendulum.

Derbyshire Interest - a George III silver mounted willow-bound treen tankard, hinged cover carved wiith leaves, the rim inscribed The Gift of Francis Mundy Esq to His Friend Peregine Bertie Esq 1776, crested, 18.5cm high, c.1776Heraldry - Crest of Bertie.Francis Noel Clarke Mundy of Markeaton Hall, near Derby (1739-1815) better known to his friends (who included Erasmus Darwin, Anna Seward (‘The Swan of Lichfield’) and John Whitehurst, was a Whig, anti-slavery campaigner, amateur poet (author of ‘Needwood Forest’) and socialite. Peregrine Bertie (1709-1779) of Lincoln’s Inn was an active barrister and a member of an ancient east midland family, and Mundy had been at Lincoln’s Inn under his tutelage as a young man in the 1760s. Bertie had married Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Payne of Tottenham Wick, Wilts. and their son, Albemarle Bertie later (in 1809) succeeded a cousin as 9th Earl of Lindsey.

It has the original ball cover to the mercury compartment to the base and has been with the same Derbyshire family for over 100 years.'John Whitehurst was a member of the Lunar Society and was a world leading maker of clocks, atmospheric barometers and instruments in the 18th century. His nephew, John, took over the business, which traded as Whitehurst and Son from c.1805, and his son, also John, took the business up to the mid 19th century.'

 AMENDMENT: Please note that this clock has an alarm mechanism not a repeating mechanism.  A coromandel and gilt-brass inlaid repeating bracket clock, by Whitehurst & Son, Derby, early 19th century, the coromandel wood case with brass quatrefoil and floral inlaid decoration, on moulded cornice above foliate brass inlay, on brass feet, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals within brass bezel, with Breguet hands and further hand, signed to dial, the single fusee movement striking a bell and with repeating mechanism, the backplate engraved Whitehurst & Son, Derby, 27.5cm high, 18.5cm wide, 13cm deep    Note: Whitehurst & Sons were clockmakers and watchmakers, invited to tender for Big Ben clock, Westminster. John (III) was nephew of John Whitehurst from whom he took over the business. Traded as Whithurst and Son from c.1805, son John took over the business after his father's death. A George III oak longcase clock case, made for a Whitehurst, Derbyshire clock, circular face, free standing pilasters shaped door to waist, canted corners, 109cm high

A Whitehurst of Derby 8 day Longcase clock with 13" round brass silvered dial eight-day movement striking on a bell. Contained in an oak case with walnut cross-banding.Condition report.Movement and dial look to be original. The seat-board is new and there are unsympathetic restorations to the case.The Whitehurst family were famous Derbyshire clockmakers, starting with John Whitehurst in the 18th century and carrying on with a succession of family members who produced fine clocks into the 19th century.

Whithurst (Whitehurst), Congleton. Thirty hour longcase clock with 11'' square brass dial single hand. The centre engraved with a single flower surrounded by leaves. A thirty hour rope driven movement striking on a bell. Oak case with glass centre (bulls eye) on trunk door. Hood has turned plain pillars. The hood sides are glazed, Dimensions 80 x 20 x 9'' Purchased from Hadfield clocks. Whitehurst was the start of the famous family of clockmakers noted for fine clocks
