This book has a lengthy presentation inscription to 'Miss Boyle O'Reilly' (daughter of Fenian and proprietor of the 'Pilot' - he had four daughters) dated May 25, 1914, the day the Home Rule Bill was passed in the House of Commons. Possibly from 'S. O'N.' Inscription runs: 'Given me by dear William O'Brien's wife while I sat in the House of Commons waiting for the passage of Home Rule. At seventeen minutes to five the division bells were set ringing. As Big Ben [???] the hour the Chief Liberal Whip reported the result, 357 to 274. Government majority 77 (sic). So the Great Bill was won[?]. Mr John Redmond took me thro' St Stephens Hall. He seemed calm and a little sad. "This is only the beginning", he said, "and tonight there are a good many ghosts about".

H Asquith in 1905 for "crossing the floor" in 1904. The Sir John Bennett full hunter pocket watch features a keyless wound movement and a minute repeater complication in a yellow metal case stamped 18C with Swiss domestic hallmarks of the period running between 1880-1934 for 18ct gold. The case measures W:53.26 x D:14.84mm with a white enamel dial and seconds subdial, the central spade and whip hands are gold with the blued seconds hand, currently covered with acrylic glass. Engraving on the outer front case: The period correct Churchill Coat of Arms/Armorial.Notes on the Garter: The engraved coat of Arms is without the order of the Garter honour, which was not bestowed until 1953. Inner front case number: 131490 Rear inner case engraving: "To Winston with gratitude H. H. Stating the pocket watch was a gift from his wife Nancy on his 65th birthday. Also included in the sale is a note from Nancy, Dowager Countess of Enniskillen when gifting the watch to a family member on the 6th of August 1997.Extract from the note: " I assure you it gives me the greatest pleasure to give you that watch of Davids - given to Winston Churchill in affection and gratitude when he crossed the floor... You have a fine sense of history and are not infrequently in the Lords". Referring to the House Of Lords Westminster. Further notes on the item: Hennell LTD London: In 1736, silversmith David Hennell founded the renowned firm of Hennell. Over the years, the company grew steadily into one of London's oldest silversmithing and jewellery manufacturers. A silver tea service for HMS Victory was one of the many notable commissions they received from Admiral Lord Nelson in 1799. The business was frequented by European Royalty, including Queen Victoria and King George V.It's worth mentioning that The Duke of Westminster was a Director of Hennell London at the time of the watch purchase in 1983. Studdy (George Ernest Studdy; 1878-1948) of a man in a chequered suit, yellow waistcoat, white hat, boots and lucky horseshoe tie pin leaning against the rope in front of a race course and blowing the froth off a glass of Scotch Ale while turning out his pockets and dropping a button, key and corkscrew to the ground next to a riding whip and bottle of Scotch Ale in front of a jockey crying on the back of a seated horse as the horse race continues on the track behind him, the poem below reading: When you’ve lost hundreds on a race, And ruin stares you in the face, Do nothing desp’rate in a hurry, But drink Scotch Ale and do not worry. The William Younger Company Brewery was founded in Edinburgh in 1778 in the grounds of Holyrood Abbey by Archibald Campbell Younger; the company was registered in 1887 and was producing a quarter of all Scotland's beers by the 1900s; in 1986 the Holyrood Brewery complex closed (now the Scottish Parliament building), and in 2017 the brand was sold to Marston's Brewery. Scotch Ale is a type of beer that refers to a strong pale ale produced in Edinburgh Scotland. Fair condition, paper browned, staining on margins, restored paper loss on margin.
