Lot 281

Porsche 911 (997.1) 3.8-litre Carrera S with the desirable manual 6-speed gearbox, offered from 12 years of ownership and looking good in Black Metallic. The 997 marked another new chapter for Porsche, although to look at, the new generation seemed to hark back to former glories, particularly in profile and the design of its oval headlights. The 997 was initially available from July 2004 in two guises, Carrera and Carrera S, both rear-wheel drive only with identical bodywork. The base Carrera stuck with the well established 3.6-litre power unit producing 325bhp, however the Carrera S had useful extra power – some 355bhp – thanks to a larger displacement engine (3.8-litres). Other general 997 enhancements included better suspension, reduced drag-coefficient, a more appealing interior and extra room for passengers. Introduced in 2005, the Carrera 4S was broadly similar but was a tad wider (44mm) to accommodate the four-wheel drive system and wider wheels. The car presented here is a 2005 Porsche 911 (997.1) 3.8-litre Carrera S specified with the drivers' choice of the manual 6-speed (G97/01) gearbox (which was reinforced by Porsche for the 'S' model) and is finished in Basalt Black Metallic with a black hood and interior. It's offered from long term ownership, some 12 years, with just one previous recorded keeper and  presents superbly, benefitting from a recent comprehensive check over and detail to ensure that it is offered looking at its very best.It was specified from new with numerous additions to standard such as electronic damper control and stability management, sports seats finished in hide, a multi-function steering wheel, top-tint screen and DVD navigation amongst others, all accompanied by a comprehensive service history.Offered at a very sensible and affordable guide giving the opportunity for Porsche ownership at an approachable level. Your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged.Specification Make: PORSCHE Model: 911 CARRERA 4S CAB Year: 2005 Chassis Number: WPOZZZ99Z6S760999 Registration Number: OU55 PMO Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 68606184 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 54353 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Black HideClick here for more details and images

Lot 267

Rather handsome and superbly equipped, Masai4x4's unique demonstrator/promotion vehicle has been fully restored and seems very sensibly estimated Land Rover's venerable Defender has evolved gradually over its quarter-century on sale, gaining new Ford engines and the odd interior tweak, but perhaps the most significant change was nothing to do with the designers at Solihull, it was its gradual adoption by trendy metropolitan elites, declaring it as their carriage of choice, taking the Land Rover legend from the country into the city. Those knowledgeable chaps at Masai4x4 in Lichfield are fully aware of this topical trend and have embraced it with this very smart conversion of a Defender 110 TD5 Double-Cab 2.5-litre into a dual purpose vehicle that combines comfortable and even stylish urban transport with the traditional versatility of a Land Rover. It was originally built as a demonstrator for Masai4x4's wide range of Defender upgrades, accessories and parts and has been totally restored inside and out - truly a one-off.Structurally, the car has been overhauled with the chassis cleaned down and repaired, the rear cross-member and floor panels replaced and all fully undersealed when finished. Full Dynamat sound deadening has been fitted throughout, the fuel tank replaced along with a fuel tank guard, and the handling and driving response have been improved with the fitting of a new suspension kit, bushes and springs and a servo-clutch upgrade to improve gear changes. All windows, window seals and doors have been replaced and the exterior body work has had a full respray in Corris Grey Metallic. Despite all the 'lifestyle' nods internally, the car retains full 'street cred' with LED lights throughout, Lynx Eye headlights, side steps, Masai nudge bar, snorkel air intake, a Masai steering guard, roof rack, ARB awning and light kit, Saw Tooth alloys and big BF Goodrich tyres. The interior has been completely re-trimmed with Masai-branded cream leatherette seat covers with black piping, matching wool carpets and suede headlining. Front and rear heated seats provide additional comfort in an already luxurious interior and a double-DIN conversion has been undertaken to allow connection to modern 'infotainment' systems, Bluetooth/ hands free and rear parking camera. Audio has been updated to include surround-sound speakers and a Pioneer sub-woofer to give high-quality audio playback way beyond the level you would normally find in a vehicle of this type. The interior look is completed by the Aluminium Billet Trim on the gear stick, transfer lever knobs, air vents and slots, door handles, seat adjusters, fuse box screws, fan controls, headlamp switches and column stalk ends. This unique Defender has covered 156,000 miles from new (the majority prior to its full rebuild) and has been enjoyed by four previous keepers. It currently has a private plate (which may be displayed in some of our images) but does not form part of the sale. The original plate is BD52 WKO which will be listed on the fresh MOT Certificate which will be issued at the time of the sale.Specification Make: LAND ROVER Model: 110 TWIN CAB PICKUP Year: 2002 Chassis Number: SALLDHF573A648812 Registration Number: BD52 WKO Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 15P43089A Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 156500 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 258

Delightfully presented ex-California 911S Targa in Gemini Blue with Hollywood provenance. Production of the second-generation 911 started in August 1973 with the 1974 model/year G-series derivative replacing the outgoing 1973 F-series. Visually, the new 911 was given a major facelift and all three production variants now came with fuel-injected 2.7-litre engines. The entry level 911 had 150bhp, the mid-range 911S offered 175bhp and the flagship 911 Carrera came with 210bhp and once again, customers were given the choice of either Coupé or Targa body styles. In 1975, the H-series Carrera gained a deeper front spoiler and an (optional) IROC-style rear spoiler. The 911S was visually unchanged, however the base 911 disappeared. This left-hand drive 911S Targa was supplied by Sporting Cars of Santa Monica and registered new in February 1975 to famous Hollywood actor, Ron Harper, remaining with him until arriving in the UK in 2018. He was famous for his parts in various American films but mostly acclaimed for his role as astronaut, Alan Virdin, in TV’s Planet of the Apes. Throughout his sole ownership of 43 years, it had oil changes every 5,000 miles punctuated by his hand written notes in the service book and the mileage of only 70,674 miles is fully corroborated. When it arrived in the UK, it was subject to a full mechanical and service overhaul by Porsche Specialist Services of Havering and the extensive work included a full service, all suspension bushes, new dampers, new steering arms, gear linkage, brakes, a full ride-height set up, corner weights and a wheel alignment check. In line with European specification, the headlight units were changed. Remarkably well preserved by the Californian climate but faded in places, a full body restoration was undertaken by the renowned ‘Kraftwork Vehicle Refinishers’ of Chelmsford Essex in 2020. It was taken back to bare metal with no replacement panels required and painted in its original colour of Gemini Blue. The body has many of the factory stickers still in place. The comprehensive history file contains the original owners wallet with service book and photos of the restoration, a photo of Ron Harper with the 911S in c.2007 and invoices relating to the work done. It has its original jack, toolkit and original Blaupunkt radio with paperwork and US Title document in Ron Harper's name and will come with a full MOT showing the mileage now at c.71,327 miles.A most beautiful 911S Targa with celebrity provenance in, perhaps, the best colour combination of the 1970s.Specification Make: PORSCHE Model: 911 S Year: 1975 Chassis Number: 9115210887 Registration Number: LFM 603N Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 6550561 Drive Side: Left-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 71327 Miles Make: LHD Interior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images

Lot 264

Quite possibly the most British vehicle imaginable; a Range Rover Classic with an Aston Martin V12 heart. Fabulously detailed, in wonderful condition, a bonkers idea turned into a wonderful reality. The first-generation Range Rover, now coined the Range Rover Classic, was produced from 1970, with the two-door models remaining hugely popular to this day. Whilst certainly up-market compared to preceding Land Rover models, the early Range Rovers had rather basic, utilitarian interiors with vinyl seats and plastic dashboards that were designed to be washed down with a hose. Convenience features such as power-assisted steering, carpeted floors, air conditioning, cloth/leather seats and wooden interior trim became more common later in the production run. Marketed as 'A Car for All Reasons', the Range Rover was more capable off-road than the Land Rover and was much more comfortable, whilst also offering a top speed of almost 100mph. With the quality of performance and ‘go anywhere’ capability with timeless styling, one can easily see why the Range Rover has been the chariot of choice by the Royal Household, celebrities, military, emergency services, explorers, and everyone in between for decades. It can be argued that the car presented here hasn’t exactly taken the path of least resistance. Quite the opposite in fact… Surely one of the most exquisite projects to reach completion, this 1971 Range Rover Classic is unlike any other. The story starts with the team at Bishops 4x4 sitting having a beer after work when a conversation sprung up about what engine to transplant into one of their ‘restoration stock’ which already had an incorrect powerplant. With the boss, Chris Bishop, having a huge appreciation for Aston Martin, but at the time without one in the garage, it became almost inevitable that a Range Rover/Aston Martin ‘lovechild’ was on the horizon. The technical specifications paint quite the picture on the level of creativity and craftsmanship the Bishops 4x4 team put into the car. Almost every single aspect has been improved, upgraded, or strengthened to end up with a fabulous cocktail of Britishness that will likely never be repeated, certainly not to this level. The car was essentially built as a showcase for what Bishops 4x4 could do, and while they knew it would be a long project, I don’t think anyone imagined it would take the next 2.5 years of full-time work to complete. The base car was a 1971 Range Rover ‘Suffix A’ that was in dire need of restoration, already housing an incorrect engine, and the Aston Martin DB7 V12 powerplant was selected for a few reasons. Firstly, the boss has a soft spot for Aston Martins, especially the V12s. Secondly it was the biggest and best power unit they could lay their hands on, with 420bhp and 400lb/ft torque, even if the crashed donor car did cost over £5,000 alone. Thirdly, and hugely importantly, it was because they were told it couldn’t be done. Clearly this was time for a “Challenge accepted” mentality.A monstrous amount of engineering went into the build of the car. The front portion of the chassis rails had to have cut-out sections put into them before re-welding with strengthening bars to compensate for the narrower rails. Due to the size of the V12, a significant proportion of the engine needed to sit under/through the scuttle in order to fit, which meant measuring, cutting and re-welding for weeks on end, with an emphasis on precision and tidiness, striving for a factory-like finish. Even with the cutting and remodelling, the engine still didn’t fit as it was, so the alternator was repositioned, which meant re-routing the ancillary drive-belt and making custom idlers to suit, with the coolant hoses and fuel pipes also requiring custom manufacturing.Supporting the modified chassis were a pair of stronger Defender-type axles with heavy-duty springs and Bilstein dampers. The front axle was then fitted with over £3,000 worth of AP Racing stopping power in the form of dinner plate-sized 362mm grooved and vented discs, with 6-piston callipers. The brakes were housed by 18-inch 5-spoke wheels with 285/65/18 Toyo Proxes tyres all-round. Due to their beefy size the tops of the arches had to be flared and the bottom of the wings altered to house them. Of course, cutting no corners, the flared arches were made up in-house from alloy. To assist its breathing, the inlet tubes were made up with free-flowing air filters feeding the inlet manifold, with the in-house custom stainless steel exhaust system fabricated in its entirety from the manifolds back. With the major mechanical complexities dealt with, it was then time to make the car run. A pair of tuneable ECUs were purchased, one for each bank of cylinders, which were then mapped to the Aston Martin factory ECU, as well as having a ‘Compushift’ mapping session for the 4-speed Ashcroft upgraded Land Rover ZF gearbox. The grille, now with twin headlights, was installed as an homage to the grandfathers of modifying and improving Range Rovers, Schuler and Overfinch, which certainly gives the car a distinctive look, if you somehow saw it before you heard it!Due to being a radically altered vehicle, instead of simply stating it had an alternative engine fitted and chancing it with the DVLA, Bishops 4x4 went down the V627/1 route, had the DVLA inspect the car and issue a Q-plate to reflect the changes. The exterior was painted in 4 layers of Bishops 4x4’s signature dark maroon colour, with a subtle grey roof. Three Aston Martin badges were fitted, one to each wing and one on the tailgate. The ‘piece de resistance’ is the airbrushed Union Jack flag on the bonnet, trailing up the wings, which took around two weeks to complete, but done so to embody the ‘Best of British’ theme the car truly represents. The interior is wonderful. It has been completed to an extremely high quality, commensurate with the external and mechanical work. It’s ultimately a blend of original and bespoke. With Range Rover seats retrimmed in soft brown leather and thick brown wool carpeting throughout. The dashboard is a wooden Wood and Pickett dash, from the workshop stock, modified to house an Aston Martin DB9 push button starter in the centre, flanked by a pair of chrome-rimmed gauges.Turning on the radio causes two Aston Martin tweeters to rise out the top of the dash, and the digital dash displays a virtual representation of the instruments from a Range Rover Classic featuring a rev counter, speedo, etc. By pushing the sport button, the dash changes the dials to represent what you see on an Aston Martin dashboard, again all digitally presented. The final touch was the build plate on the slam panel which reads AMRR007001, giving a shared nod to both the Range Rover host and the Aston Martin heart and soul.It is not unfair to say that the whole project was brain-numbingly complex, and yet what a fantastically wonderful machine has emerged. The craftsmanship is simply unbelievable and needs to be seen in person. With the Range Rover being marketed as 'A Car for All Reasons', the reason for this is surely ‘Because we can’.You do not want to miss the opportunity to see this car in person. While the phrase ‘unrepeatable’ gets thrown around fairly frequently in the car world, I challenge anyone to say they could repeat this car, to this standard, in that timeframe, and offer it at such a reasonable estimate.SpecificationClick here for more details and images

Registration - CRM56KChassis No. - WB26540DLM.O.T. - ExemptOdometer - TBC‘CRM 56K’ is something of a mystery car. According to the DVLA it is a Triumph 1500 which was registered in September 1971. Yet the twin, square headlamps (the 1500 boasted round, quad lamps), interior trim, facia, Dolomite 1300 badging and Triumph Dolomite 1300 vehicle emission control information plate under the bonnet would appear to indicate that it could be a Dolomite 1300 – which wasn’t available until 1976. The only history that accompanies this car records work done by the vendor, who acquired the vehicle last year, so one can only speculate on what the solution to the mystery is, though the vendor does believe that the car had an engine change from 1500cc to 1300cc at some point in its life. Whatever the answer, ‘CRM 56K’ is undeniably one of Triumph’s popular range of junior cars from the 1970s, even if precisely which one it is remains uncertain. The car has a wonderfully ‘70s feel, the recently-resprayed Saffron yellow body set off by the brown roof (with pop-up sunroof) which matches the brown vinyl interior. The odometer reads 208 miles, but the vendor tells us that the vehicle has had an odometer change. The car’s last MOT – in September 2015 – recorded a mileage of 93,547. Under its current ownership, the bottom half of the car has been repainted, the roof has had a respray, the petrol tank repaired a new steering knuckle fitted and welding work carried out and new badges fitted. The vendor rates all aspects of the car as ‘good’, apart from the electrics, which they consider ‘average’. ‘CRM 56K’ is being offered at No Reserve.‘CRM 56K’ is something of a mystery car. Triumph’s ‘junior car’ line-up began in 1965 with the front-wheel-drive 1300. This was modern, well-engineered and well-mannered to drive but its target market had lower-priced rivals to spend their money on and in 1970 it was replaced as the company’s entry-level model by the cheaper, rear-wheel-drive Toledo, which lacked the more luxurious interior of the 1300 but shared its short bodyshell. Triumph retained a front-wheel-drive junior model in the form of the 1500, a four-door saloon produced from 1970-1973, with a longer bodyshell with squared-off boot to echo that of the revised 2000. In 1972 Triumph introduced the Dolomite, utilising the 1500’s longer body but with rear-wheel-drive and a potent 1850cc engine. This sporting model was an instant hit, and the introduction of the 2.0-litre 16-valve Dolomite Sprint in 1973 launched an icon – a Dolomite Sprint would win the 1975 British Saloon Car Championship. In 1975 Triumph rationalised its disparate group of junior models, all under the Dolomite name. A 1300cc version was announced – the new Dolomite 1300 - the Triumph 1500 became the Dolomite 1500, and the original, 1850c Dolomite was renamed the Dolomite 1850HL. But, by 1980, the Dolomite was seen as outdated, and the entire range ceased production, to be replaced by the Acclaim. In summary: · A ‘mystery car’ –one of Triumph’s popular and collectable small saloons from the 1970s, but which one? · Recently resprayed in Saffron yellow with a brown roof · Offered at No Reserve

Lot 196

The Jaguar XK150 was manufactured between 1957 and 1961 and despite having a family resemblance to the XK120 and XK140, the XK150 was radically modernised. A one-piece windscreen replaced the split screen and the wing line no longer dropped as much over the doors. The bonnet was widened, opened down to the wings and on the roadster, the bulkhead was moved back four inches to make the bonnet longer. In the interior, the XK140's walnut dashboard was replaced by a leather trimmed unit. The standard engine, the same as fitted to the XK140, was the 3.4-litre DOHC Jaguar straight-six rated at 180bhp at 5750rpm. Either wire wheels or disc wheels could be specified and the suspension and chassis were very similar to that on the XK140. These were high-performance, well-appointed sports touring cars and could cope with long distances with alacrity. This is a rather interesting example as it was originally shipped to Casablanca, Morocco. It must have been quite a sight on the roads there in 1960 and would have been one of very few XK150s over there at the time. The heritage certificate confirms that the car was built as a left hand drive coupé in black with a red interior, exactly as it is presented today. The engine number also matches the heritage certificate. Our vendor purchased the car from a friend who inherited the car around 10 years ago, but the car was stored in a barn in France and it wasn’t collected until 2023! The car was covered in dust but had clearly been stored in a nice dry environment. Once cleaned, it was clear that the quality of the paintwork and panel gaps were excellent and we are told it was in excellent structural condition too. It has been through some gentle recommissioning and now starts and runs beautifully. The car is presented in lovely condition, with room for some improvements to take it to the next level and is offered to auction without reserve. The car is supplied with a NOVA certificate, so all UK taxes have been paid, but it is not currently UK registered. Consigned by Fraser Smith

These fabulous and popular little cars were designed in 1959 and were heralded as a new concept in car design. Little did they know or envisage what would become of these great models. With a monocoque shell, transversely mounted engine and front wheel drive, the new 'Mini' soon became popular across the world and to all types of individuals, well healed or not! The potential for competition use was soon seen by John Cooper; he eventually persuaded BMC and the two worked together culminating in the birth of the Austin Mini Cooper and the Morris Mini Cooper in 1961. Victories in the 1964, 1965 and 1967 Monte-Carlo Rallies set the Mini on the road to fame but probably the greatest publicity was gained from their somewhat unfair, disqualification for lighting irregularities in the 1966 event after coming in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. A more powerful Mini Cooper, dubbed the 'S', was developed in tandem and released in 1963.First registered on 26th August 1964, this fantastic FIA rally specification Cooper S has been cherished by the vendor for the past twenty-three years. Wanting for nothing, this car has enjoyed three major refreshes during his ownership with respected preparers Richard Higgs, NVJ Developments and most recently this year with ATA Classics. Whilst it has been built into an FIA specification rally car, due to work commitments, the car has hardly seen any competition. A Longman cylinder head, rally camshaft, competition pistons, uprated gearbox and differential all make this car a potent and quick example. Safety features include; foam filled fuel tanks, fire extinguisher and six-point roll cage. The vendor reports the car to run and drive extremely well and is only selling due to continuing work commitments meaning he’ll unlikely have any time to compete with it anytime soon.Supplied with a V5C registration document, FIA papers and lots of invoices. A versatile car that has had over £37,000 spent on maintaining it to a high level, this wonderful example is ready to rally, race or simply blast to the pub in. Consigned by Will Penrose. The first Porsche 911 was introduced in 1963 as the replacement for the much-loved Porsche 356. It has a distinctive design; rear-engined and with independent rear suspension, an evolution of the swing axle on the Porsche 356. The engine was also air-cooled until the introduction of the Type 996 in 1998. Since its introduction in 1963, it has undergone continual development, although the basic concept has remained little changed. In 1973, the Carrera name was re-introduced from the 356 Carrera which had itself been named after Porsche's class victories in the Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico in the 1950’s. The most notable advances in 1984 were the introduction of the 3.2-litre engine. Although it remained an air-cooled 'flat-six', the '3.2' was 80% new and incorporated an effective cam chain tensioner and associated lubrication system that at last addressed a perennial 911 shortcoming. With 231bhp on tap, the new 'boxer' motor endowed the Carrera with a level of performance approaching that of the original 911 Turbo of 1974, the bald statistics being a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 152mph.This example was registered in the UK in 1987 although it was manufactured in 1984 as confirmed by the Certificate of Authenticity. A full body restoration has been carried out, with photographic evidence. We are advised this 911 drives well with no known faults, the 3.2 litre engine reported to running well. The blue coachwork is in good order with some minor age-related marks. Supplied with a history folder and V5 registration document together with a current MoT test certificate valid until 17th April 2025. Air-cooled 911’s continue to be increasingly popular. Consigned by Stewart Banks. THE BODY HAS BEEN FULLY RESTORED AND PRESENTS WELLFIVE-SPEED GEARBOXRUNS AND DRIVES WELLMoT'd UNTIL 17TH APRIL 2025

Registration No: SCZ 9635 Chassis No: WP0ZZZ94ZGN405367 MOT: June 2024Supplied by AFN Limited of MiddlesexFitted with retro-fit Design-90 alloy wheelsOffered with a selection of invoices for parts and maintenance151,940 recorded miles Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982 to replace the Porsche 924 as their entry-level model, although the 924 continued until 1988 as an even lower-priced alternative. Many Porsche enthusiasts considered the 944 to be the first real front-engined Porsche, because it didn’t have the Audi sourced 2.0 litre engine from the 924. Instead, the 944 started life with a 2.5 litre straight-4 engine which was based on one-half of the Porsche 928's V8 engine. Based on the earlier 924 body, some noticeable changes included flared wings, flared quarter panel and a larger rear spoiler. This charming 1986 Porsche 944 was originally supplied by AFN Limited of Middlesex. Presenting in Guards Red, it boasts a stylish set of 16” retro-fit Design-90 alloy wheels, typically found on the later S2 model of the 944 and has evidently received a cosmetic makeover in recent times. With its pleasing Porsche charm offered by its pin-striped Brown cloth upholstery, notable features inside include electric adjustment for the driver's seat and a facelifted dash design reminiscent of the models seen throughout the 968 series. Additional features comprise an electric (lift-out) sunroof with a storage bag and electric windows plus mirrors.Despite clocking some 151,940 miles, not untypical at this age, 'SCZ 9635' comes with a comprehensive history file boasting 20 old MOTs dating back to 1990 and 2 keys. The history file also includes invoices for parts and maintenance, as well as purchase receipts and copies of old registration documents. Additionally, the file contains the V5C, manuals, and service book detailing 15 old service stamps, the most recent of which is dated May 2005 at 130,960 miles, along with five additional stamps for brake fluid/coolant changes. Please follow this link for a list of recommended couriers: https://www.davidlay.co.uk/couriers/Some damage to the Variax knob, it seems that the top of the pot has snapped and is not fixed securely, an amateur repair has been made with glue and is therefore quite delicate. May need a new pot fitted (an easy fix).A photograph has been added of the Variax knob. It is not level with the guitar and wobbles, due to the aforementioned glue repair. It does however still work as it should. A clip has been added to the headstock of the guitar, this is removable. There are no other issues to report, the guitar and pedal are in good working order.

Pair: Lieutenant L. H. Forrest, Royal Flying Corps and 47th Sikhs, a DH9 pilot of 27 Squadron who was shot down, wounded and taken Prisoner of War whilst trying to carry out a raid on the bridge at Voyenne, as part of the first day of the Battle of Amiens British War and Victory Medals (Lieut. L. H. Forrest. R.A.F.) minor edge bruising, generally nearly very fine (2) £300-£400 --- Lionel Hugh Forrest was born in May 1897, the son of H. E. Forrest, a musical instrument dealer. Forrest was educated at Bishop Vesey’s School, Sutton Coldfield. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 47th Sikhs in November 1915, and advanced to Lieutenant later the following year. Forrest transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in early 1917, and carried out initial training as a pilot. He was posted as a pilot for operational flying with 27 Squadron (D.H.9’s) on the Western Front in July 1918. The Squadron was tasked with bombing and reconnaissance operations, and Forrest often found himself crewed with Lieutenant S. W. P. Foster-Sutton as his Observer. The fate of the pair is described in The Flying Elephants: The History of No. 27 Squadron RFC/RAF 1915 to 1969, by Chaz Bowyer: ‘By the end of July preparations were complete for the first main Allied offensive since the perilous days of March 1918. Accordingly at the beginning of August, IX Brigade left the French zone, 27 Squadron moving to Beauvois on August 8. This same day saw the start of the Battle of Amiens and 27 were in action immediately. Just after dawn fourteen DHs attacked St. Christ aerodrome in the Peronne sector, while at mid-day a mixed force of DH4’s and 9’s bombed bridges over the Somme at Bethencourt, Voyennes and Offoy from low level. Once lightened of their bombs all aircraft dropped down to deck-level and completed their sorties by strafing German troops, transport and emplacements with machine-gun fire. German fighters scoured the whole battle front offering fanatical resistance to the Allied aircraft, among them the Richthofen “Circus” which claimed thirteen victims on that date. None of these belonged to 27 but the squadron was attacked by a flight from Jasta 29 and lost three bombers. These were DH9 D 1719 (to Oberleutnant H. Auffarth), DH9 D 7317 (Vizefeldwebel Gregor) and DH4 B 2133 (victor unknown). Of the crews, Lts. H. M. Brown, L. H. Forest [sic] and S. W. P. Foster-Sutton survived as prisoners of the Germans.’ Both Forrest and Foster-Sutton were wounded, and taken Prisoner of War by the Germans. Their aircraft was claimed as shot down by the German Ace Lieutnant Richard Wentzl of Jasta 6. Forrest was repatriated in December 1918, and relinquished his temporary commission in the R.A.F. to return to the Indian Army in October 1919. In later life resided at Old Parrs, Middletown, Welshpool. Sold with extensive copied research, Combat Reports, ORB entries etc.

Stanley Fereday Pinker (South African, 1924-2012)Naturmensch signed 'SFPinker' (lower right); bears the gallery label 'South African National Gallery/ Accepted on loan/ Exhibition: Stanley Pinker/ Artist: Pinker, S./ Title: Naturmensch/ Receipt No:/ Loans Serial No: L83/6/ Lent by: The Artist/ Address: CAPE TOWN/ Cat. No: 13/ Date: 20/7/83'/ further titled 'NATURMENSCH'/ further inscribed and titled 'STANLEY PINKER/ Title: NATUURMENSCH' (verso)oil on canvas 41 x 46cm (16 1/8 x 18 1/8in).(framed)Footnotes:ProvenanceGifted by the artist, 2002;A private collection.ExhibitedCape Town, South African National Gallery, Stanley Pinker, (July, 1983), no. 13. Often conflating imagery of officials with wild animals, Naturmensch undoubtedly presents us a political observation that has defined Pinker's oeuvre. In many ways menacing, the death imagery of Naturmensch (from the crow, to hyena, to skull) shrouds the work in an intimidating guise. The coolness of the palette also points towards the concept of death that pervasively looms over the work. The eyes of the hyena also showcase another layer of the artist's talent. Translated, the title of the work relates to a person considered unsophisticated by western colonial standards, or in other words 'a man of nature'. Within the context of his wider body of work, it could be concluded that the title, in incorporation with the content of the painting, refers to the attitudes of the colonisers towards the people of South Africa during the apartheid. While this may likely be a conscious link by the artist, Pinker himself claimed that the political content was not always the primary component of his image making; stating that the commentary was also a vessel for humour to be incorporated thematically in his work. He states this in an interview with Michael Stevenson: 'The issues are there but are usually covered up with humour of a very cynical nature.' (Michael Stevenson, Stanley Pinker, (Cape Town: Michael Stevenson, 2004), p. 20). Indeed, Pinker maintained that a political observation was an integral part to his creative process, resisting in defining himself as a purely abstract artist in order to maintain a level of narrative direction, not to leave his work up to pure emotive interpretation. He stated in the same interview with Stevenson, 'I could never be an abstract artist - the content and information that surrounded us in South Africa are too important for me.' (Michael Stevenson, Stanley Pinker, (Cape Town: Michael Stevenson, 2004), p.18.)As a selected work for the artist's solo exhibition in 1983 held by the South African National Gallery, it can be concluded that Naturmensch should be considered as a work of cultural significance. Furthermore, we get a sense of the work's importance given that it was on loan from the artist's personal collection at the time, given the gallery label on the reverse of the work. The exclusivity of the present work must therefore not be overlooked and therefore its gravitas in the artist's oeuvre must be emphasised.BibliographyMichael Stevenson, Stanley Pinker, (Cape Town: Michael Stevenson, 2004)This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Registration No: Unregistered Frame No: 5JD 19623 Engine No: 5JD 19623 CC: 150 MOT: ExemptThe Sportique Supreme is one of the rarest British built Vespa Douglas modelsOne of the last ever models produced by Douglas in BristolOriginal paint under the overpaintOriginal matching numbersOriginal Green logbook for simple UK registrationThe first time a Vespa was seen in Great Britain was on the Douglas stand at the 1949 Motor Cycle Show. The scooter was discovered by Douglas managing Director Claude McCormack when the struggling company was in the hands of the official receiver. The Vespa presented itself as a solution to the companies problems and a deal was made with Piaggio to begin production of the Vespa under licence in Britain starting with the ‘Rod model’ launched in March 1951. Piaggio soon regretted this decision and consequently Douglas under-performed and was several years behind the Italian models until the late 1950’s when parity was almost made. The result in today’s international collectors market is that British built Douglas Vespas have in recent times emerged with a special rarity status. The Supreme was one of three special edition Sportiques made by Douglas in Bristol. The Sportique itself was almost identical to the Piaggio VBB with a reliable 150cc motor using many Piaggio supplied Italian parts and sporting an attractive GS style clam shaped 60 MPH speedometer. The ‘Grand Luxe’ ‘Grand Tourer’ and ‘Supreme’ were all unique designs built from 1962 to 1965. The Supreme was supplied in bespoke silver paint with chrome side panels and front mudguard from new in keeping with the ‘Mod’ demand at the time. This Supreme was originally registered in Taunton, Somerset on 20th April 1964. A new keeper in 1974 a Thomas Cole from Bath and then a John Lewis of Radstock. It has obviously been overpainted but some effort has been made to reveal the original paint and this could be continued. The result could potentially be a unique patina. The chrome panels are still showing some chrome evidence and a similar outcome could be achieved. It is evident that the scooter has had a sidecar fitted in its life and the top fitting bracket is still attached. There is one hole in the floor where the lower sidecar bracket would have been. Other than that it is very solid generally all over. There is a high level of originality including: Douglas D handgrips, original speedometer, lights are original, seat and badges. The front Douglas badge is also original and just needs the remaining overpaint scraped off. The cylinder head and exhaust are missing however there are some parts supplied and replacement parts for these engines are not difficult to source. This is an extremely worthwhile project and a very rare machine. For more information, please contact: Paul Diamond info@vintagescooters.co.uk 07768 313001

A GEORGE III MAHOGANY KNEEHOLE ARCHITECT'S DESK ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CIRCA 1780 The inset ratchet top with a section hinged to create a shelf when in the raised position, the frieze drawer with a sliding inset section above divisions, the kneehole door enclosing vertical divisions, the plinth base with concealed casters 83.5cm high, 115cm wide, 61cm deep The use of S-pattern keyholes, as displayed by this desk, is a detail is almost unique to items of furniture made in the workshop of Thomas Chippendale. In his 1768 account to Lady Shelburne, Chippendale mentioned that a commode table has 'very good spring and tumbler locks and S-bitted keys' (Gilbert, op. cit., vol. I, p. 253, and vol. II, p. 147, fig. 267). The intriguing asymmetry of the S-shaped brass escutcheon would have been Chippendale's primary objective, though the encumbrance would also have minimally increased the level of security of the lock. This keyhole pattern has very occasionally been recorded on furniture attributed to Chippendale's competitor John Cobb, for example on the commode sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 19 April 2001, lot 148. However, nearly all occurrences are on furniture attributed to Chippendale. Condition Report: Desk with the marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions and minor chips commensurate with age and use. Desk in generally good order overall. Leather surfaces with the expected wear, marks and creases. Key present for the cupboard door. No key present for drawers, all are open. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

1938 Morris 8, Series II, 817cc. Registration number EAR 581. Chassis number S 2/E 166284. Engine number B 91696.Sold with the V5C, R.F. 60, keys, many old MOT's, history/receipt folder. One of the great automotive success stories of the Thirties and one of the best-loved pre-war cars, it is no exaggeration to say that the Eight was the car that saved Morris.Small and affordable but with room for all the family, it was far more suited to Britain's increasingly crowded roads than the larger models that had formerly underpinned the Morris range. So successful was it that within three years of its introduction in June 1935, over 116,000 had been sold by the time it was replaced by the Series II in 1937.Available as a two or four-seat tourer and a two or four-door saloon, the Eight was capable of 60mph and 40mpg from its 23.5bhp 918cc side-valve engine, driving through a three-speed box with synchromesh on the top two gears. It also benefited from hydraulic brakes and a good level of equipment.EAR has known history back to 1964 when it was owned by Albert Rapson of Hertfordshire, five further owners are noted on the R.F.60, there is then a gap until the MOT records which start in 1985 at 5232 miles and continue until 2005 at 19,119 miles when Stephen Nobes is recorded as the owner on the V5C. Barry Springfield-Hunt bought it in 2007, and then in 2015 David Powell was the owner; our vendor bought it from him in 2018. The interior was refreshed in 2009 and the engine in 2012. At some point the body has undertaken a full restoration. During our vendors custodianship he has overhauled the brakes, the wiring, the ignition and other general maintenance.A change of lives priorities nows means that our vendor has decided to part with "Daisy". Sold with the V5C, R.F. 60, keys, many old MOT's, history/receipt folder.

It was intended to be a versatile and highly mobile machine gun.2. **Caliber:** The MG34 fired the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge.3. **Action:** It is a recoil-operated, air-cooled machine gun with a fully automatic firing mode. It used a short-recoil system with a rotating bolt.4. **Rate of Fire:** The MG34 had a variable rate of fire, capable of firing at a very high cyclic rate (around 800 to 900 rounds per minute). The rate could be adjusted using a fire selector.5. **Barrel Change:** One of the innovative features of the MG34 was its quick-change barrel system, allowing the gunner to replace a hot barrel with a cool one to prevent overheating during sustained fire.6. **Magazine:** The MG34 was typically belt-fed, using non-disintegrating metal-link belts. It could also be fed from a detachable drum magazine or a saddle drum mounted on the side.7. **Sights:** The MG34 had adjustable iron sights, with a rear aperture sight and a front blade sight. Despite its relatively complex design, the MG34 was well-regarded for its accuracy and versatility. The MG34 is considered one of the first general-purpose machine guns and played a significant role in German infantry tactics during World War II. Its design innovations influenced subsequent machine gun development, and it remains a notable firearm in the history of military small arms.Non-firing replica.15.3 lbs.48 inches.cocking mechanism and working trigger.

As the intervening ice is dead level we have done a good deal of hob-nobbing and got in most of our stores by sledge. She will leave at the end of this month with the mails and we shall follow if and when we can.” “We have been able to work all through the winter contrary to expectation. The only thing to do is to keep out of the wind. A wind adds 20 to 40 degrees on to the perception of cold, but all the extreme low temperatures occur in almost minus 50 is then warmer than zero in a breeze. "We are just 20 miles from the crater of Mount Erebus which is constantly smoking, but it has never given us any other entertainment.”Note: Thomas Vere Hodgson was born in Birmingham on 19 February 1864. He started his career in a bank, but studied biology in his spare time and applied successfully for a job as assistant in the Marine Biological Association's laboratories in Plymouth. He joined the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04 (Discovery), led by Robert Falcon Scott, as biologist. He took part in several sledging journeys and collected many biological specimens during the expedition. He was awarded a Polar Medal for his part in the expedition.Hodgson returned to the laboratories in Plymouth after the expedition, becoming curator of the city's museum and art gallery. His contributions to scientific journals won him distinction and he became an expert on porcelain. He died in 1926 and is commemorated in the Antarctic with Cape Hodgson (78°07' S 166°05' E). (Biography courtesy of the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge) From the estate of the Lamorna artist Eleanor Hughes, née Waymouth, thence by descent.Mr & Mrs. Frederick Waymouth and their family lived in Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand, in their grand home 'Karewa' now known as 'Mona Vale,' an important historic homestead. Mr Waymouth, a successful businessman, was the managing director of Canterbury Frozen Meats, and with his wife Alice, were prominent members of Christchurch society. The 'Discovery' docked in Lyttelton, the port for Christchurch, on 29th November 1901. The Waymouth family entertained members of the expedition in their beautiful home 'Karewa' and Frederick Waymouth also provisioned them with supplies. On December 21st, after a three-week stay in New Zealand, the 'Discovery' set sail and headed south for Antarctica. The correspondence that followed their visit is a testament of affection towards Alice Waymouth, and the warmth and hospitality she showed them is gratefully reflected back in the light-hearted conversational nature of these letters even when discussing the hardships of extreme cold and being locked long-term within the ice pack.In the introduction to his account of the 1901 expedition ‘The Voyage of the Discovery’ Robert F Scott writes about the kindness his team received from the people of New Zealand. He goes on to list nine men who provided particular assistance and this includes Frederick Waymouth.“In considering such general kindness it is almost invidious to mention particular names, but the following gentlemen are among those who must be especially remembered by us for the manner in which they were ever ready to assist us: His Excellency the Governor Lord Ranfurly, the Premier Mr Sedden, the Hon. C C Bowen, Captain Hutton of the Christchurch Museum, Mr Kinsey, Mr Waymouth, Mr A Rhodes, Mr Coleridge Farr of the Christchurch Observatory and Mr H J Miller of Lyttelton.”Further information in our blog

1962 Triumph TR4 Transmission: manualMileage:75331Produced between 1961 and 1967, the TR4 combined a new, modern and aggressive body design by famed Italian stylist, Giovanni Michelotti with the basic chassis of the previous TR3A. The TR4 also improved passenger comfort with wind-up windows, face-level ventilation and an optional hardtop. The 2138cc engine of the late-production TR3A continued while the 1991cc engine was also made available to buyers who wanted to participate in two litre racing. When equipped with the optional overdrive, the TR4 was good for a top speed of almost 110mph. Today, the four-cylinder TRs are among the easiest of post-war classic sports cars to own and maintain being supported by a multitude of component suppliers and other specialists.Purchased new by Alan Bates, renowned Jazz record producer, impresario and the man who launched the career of Jamie Cullum, this TR4 is finished in red with black trim and first registered to Mr Bates on 14th June in 1962. Mr Bates had worked previously with Jimmy Hendrix, Tina Turner, and Otis Redding, while working for Polydor records, but in the late 60's we are informed by his daughter that he took this left-hand drive example to Paris where he lived and worked for several years opposite the Moulin Rouge, running Riverside Records before returning with the car to Southwest London where it remained. Sadly, after his passing in January 2023, the car was left to his wife and now owner of 2063 WK, who informs us that the car has been dry stored under covers in the family garage for about a decade, however, it was subject to an oil change and run in the summer of 2017 by Mr Bates nephew. Recently the car has been discovered, removed from the garage and sent to NVS for a light recommissioning, new oil, fuel and plugs all fitted and the car, although would benefit from further recommissioning should the buyer wish to use it on the road, it now starts and runs on the turn of the key and rolling freely however will be required to be trailered away. One can only imagine the people who have been passengers in 2063 WK and the events it would have been parked outside, a car Alan could not bare to part with throughout his life and was fondly remembered by his family, but for further recommissioning a wonderful sports car with a nice provenance and just one previous keeper. 1974 Lamborghini Urraco 250S Transmission: manualMileage:In the early '70s, the late Ferruccio Lamborghini had decided it was time to add a smaller model to the line-up that until then, only consisted of V12 engine cars. It was this decision that led to a V8 powered model being produced that was able to compete on the same level as the Ferrari Dino 246 or the Porsche 911, so, preliminary work began on a model that would become the Urraco. At the November 1970 Turin Auto Show, the first pre-production Urraco crafted by Marcello Gandini, designer of the Lamborghini Countach, went on display, showing off its handsome looks, angular frontage with pop-up headlights and large, wide opening doors. All-in-all a well-balanced car that, once you got to know it, was acknowledged as a true 'Raging Bull'. 1972 saw the improved two-door coupé, Urraco S introduced, utilising a full leather upholstery, powered windows that were now also tinted and an optional metallic paint coat available. The engine also received an update, and was fitted with new Weber 40 DCNF carburettors, capable of synchronous opening and high rates of flow making them ideal for highly tuned engines. This superb example of this rare Italian sports car is presented in Blue Tahiti with Senape leather/cloth interior. It was delivered from new to Achilli Motors in Italy and there is a Certificate from Lamborghini confirming the original car configuration (right hand drive) which is in the history file. The car was first registered in the UK in 1982 and was purchased by the present owner in 2008. The car benefits from air conditioning and electric windows and has been kept in long term, secure, dehumidified storage as part of a significant Italian car collection and used regularly. It has history going as far back as 1996 with specialists Colin Clarke and Emblem Sports Cars with a major service including cambelt change in 2017 at 15,843km with the current odometer reading 15,962 which is believed to be genuine. The owner has recently carried out a minor service, checkover and MoT which was done in February 2024. Everything works as it should we are informed and the car is featured in Landsem's 'The Lamborghini Urraco' and it comes with a fitted indoor car cover. A superb example of this sought after Italian marque which are becoming more difficult to find. Consigned by James Good.

1950 Jaguar XK120 Roadster Transmission: manualMileage:32000The Jaguar XK120 was manufactured between 1948 and 1954; Jaguar's first sports car since the SS100, which ceased production in 1940. The XK120 was launched in roadster form at the 1948 London Motor Show as a show car for the new Jaguar XK engine. It caused a sensation thus persuading Jaguar founder and design boss William Lyons to put the car into production. The '120' in its name referred to its 120mph top speed which made the XK120 the world's fastest standard production car at the time of its launch. It was available in two open versions; first as the roadster then also as a drophead coupé from 1953 and also as a closed, or 'fixedhead' coupé from 1951. With an alloy cylinder head and twin side-draft SU carburettors, the double overhead-cam 3.4 litre straight-six XK engine was comparatively advanced for mass-produced units of its time. This same basic design of the XK engine, later modified into 3.8 litre and 4.2 litre versions, survived late into the 1980s.Manufactured in August 1950, this XK120 Roadster is one of the earliest XK's built in steel after the factory moved away from aluminium over an ash frame. Notable features indicating this as an early car include the separate chrome side lights, the lack of wing vents, the early 'studless' cam cover engine and tall carburettor dashpots. Built at the Browns Lane Jaguar factory in Coventry, the accompanying letter from Jaguar Heritage confirms that the car was sold directly and shipped to Brylaw Motors of Melbourne, Australia. The car remained in Australia up until the late 1980's when the owner, a Mr. Hall shipped the car back to the UK when his job for Coca-Cola took him from the South Pacific region to Europe. He later went on to become Vice President of Coca-Cola in Europe and presumably, this influenced the decision to move. The car boasts an impressive specification including a five-speed gearbox, telescopic shock absorber upgrade, polyurethane suspension bushes, aluminium fuel tank, electric Kenlow cooling fan, adjustable electric power steering, aluminium sports bucket seats, Brooklands wind deflectors, recessed Monza style fuel filler cap, bonnet strap and bonnet louvres. To add to all this, the car has also benefitted from recently being repainted to a high level in British Racing Green and retrimmed in tan leather. The vendor reports the car to run and drive very well and is only offered for sale to fund a new acquisition.Supplied with a V5C registration document and file of receipts amongst other information. The Roadster version of the beautiful XK120 has always been the most coveted of the XK120 line up and to find such an early car with subtle, but practical modifications is a rare find. 1997 Rover Mini John Cooper Sports Touring Transmission: manualMileage:63000When it was launched in 1959 the Mini became an instant favourite at every level of society, and soon became a motorsport champion across multiple racing genres, partly thanks to John Cooper Garages, who having homed their skills in Formula 1 began modifying the car for more performance, becoming an authorised upgrade from the factory. By the 1990s there were glossy brochures showing all the available options for upgrading your Mini with Cooper Garages while keeping your new car warranty, whether you wanted cosmetic, interior, handling or engine upgrades, Cooper had you covered so you could make the infinity customisable Mini as individual as you wanted. The Sport 5 was a conversion offered by John Cooper Garages, which boosted power to 86bhp. This version featured, as standard, a five-speed Jack Knight Designs gearbox, which helped to maximise the extra performance of the reworked engine. The Mini Cooper S Touring was virtually the same as the Sport 5, both conversions added unique side decals and other exclusive details. These conversions could also be fitted to non-Cooper MPi Minis and limited editions, although the majority were added to Cooper models. Both conversions were approved by Rover as factory conversions in 1999.This 1997 Sports Touring presented in British Racing Green boasts the five-speed Jack Knight Designs gearbox and upgraded power unit from John Cooper Works. The optional John Cooper deep leather bucket seats adorn the interior as does the leather door cards, sunroof and wood veneer trim finish. Supplied with the bookpack and importantly conversion certificate, this example was put into storage in 2016 as special Mini prices began to increase and has been fully recommissioned this year. The odometer has been changed but this was denoted correctly on the MoT test certificate with the true mileage 63,000. Offered with an MoT test certificate and those iconic Mini spotlights, this is a fast, rare, iconic and yet luxury 90's Mini we think certain to appreciate in value with just three former keepers. Consignor Mathew Priddy.

A RARE PAIR OF BLUE AND WHITE MINIATURE TEAPOTS AND COVERS, KANGXI PERIOD 康熙時期一對青花小茶壺Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 1662-1722. Each delicately potted, of rectangular section, the bulbous body with a curved spout and a tall U-shaped handle over the domed cover surmounted by a knop finial. Each finely decorated in well graduated shades of cobalt blue to the body with foliate-shaped panels enclosing floral sprays and rockwork, surrounded by floral scroll, the rim and cover with scroll bands, the spout and handle with swirling clouds. Lindisay’, the other with two old collector’s labels, ‘John S. Lindisay’ and ‘25I2’, to the base. Frances Louisa Dickson (1876-1967, née Maunsell) was an avid collector of both European and Chinese porcelain. She lived with her husband, Colonel William Dickson, and their four daughters at Kildimo House, county Limerick, Ireland, and in Bournemouth, England, in 1910. While little is known about her life, Frances Dickson’s substantial contribution to The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge University, has been noted for a great variety of porcelain figures and vessels from various ancient periods.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, including dark spots and some minor surface level scratches. One teapot with a shallow chip to the mouth, and a small chip to the cover with an old repair.Weight: 163.4 cm and 177.4 cmDimensions: Height 10.6 cm (each), Width 9.8 cm (each) Expert’s note: In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, miniature versions of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain forms were highly prized among collectors. Some of these miniatures would even be placed in ornate ‘porcelain cabinets’, alongside larger ceramics. An example of such a display can be viewed at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag (formerly the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague) where an elaborate 18th-century dollhouse contains its own miniature ‘porcelain room’.Literature comparison: Compare a related group of three miniature blue and white teapots similarly decorated with ‘Long Elizas’ and with a ‘yu’ mark on the base, dated to the Kangxi period, from the Robert Lehman Collection, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1975.1.1712.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie’s London, 12 November 2002, lot 103Price: GBP 5,019 or approx. AN ARCHAIC YELLOW & RUSSET JADE DRAGON PENDANT, EASTERN ZHOU DYNASTY 東周黃玉龍紋佩Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Opinion: The quality of this example is perhaps most visible when images of the right and left sides are viewed simultaneously, because only then it becomes apparent how much care was given by the craftsman to ensure that the spiral c-scroll clouds were laid out in an identical fashion. The quality is further personified by the rare color of the jade and the magnificent polish.China, 6th-4th century BC. Carved in the form of a sinuous dragon, with head turned looking back, the s-shaped body with spirals carved in relief. The translucent stone of a fine yellow tone with russet shadings at the edges.Provenance: Collection of Pierre Lallier. Pierre Lallier (1946-2021) was a master printer, having run the famous Atelier Georges Leblanc since 1968. He was also a passionate scholar and committed private collector, spending nearly half a century of his life building his private collection. He started at the age of 12, perusing the Parisian flea markets with his father, extensively researching every piece of interest, while also confirming its dating and provenance. He loved his objects, cherished them, and never wanted to part with them.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few minuscule nicks, some of which have smoothened over time. Natural inclusions and fissures.Weight: 21.9 gDimensions: Length 8 cmJade, known as the ‘Stone of Heaven’, represents wisdom, beauty, courage, and perfection. This combined with the powerful iconography of the dragon, creates a strong symbol of luck and good fortune. Jades in this form have a long tradition of being used as ritualistic objects, in particular tokens of rank and symbolic aids for the celestial journey thought to be undertaken by the dead. In the Zhou dynasty, the number of ritualistic jades increased significantly in burial sites, as multiple plaques, pendants, and beads were draped over the face and body of the deceased.Literature comparison: Refer to Michael Gulbenkian’s article Archaic Jades, Arts of Asia, May-June 1983, where the carved c-scroll cloud motif is used as a methodology to date archaic jades.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie’s Hong Kong, 30 May 2017, lot 2719Price: HKD 1,860,000 or approx. EUR 239,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing.Description: A white jade dragon-form pendant, Warring States period (475-221 BC)Expert remark: This comparable shows another iteration of the same design. Particular attention should be paid to the depiction of the lower jaw and snout of the dragon as they are executed in the same manner. While the primary color of the stone is of a different hue, the Christie’s pendant also has an attractive russet tinge around the outer edges, possibly signifying that both these ‘pendants’ were carved from pebbles just slightly larger than their finished size.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie’s Hong Kong, 2 December 2021, lot 2702Price: HKD 687,500 or approx. EUR 82,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing.Description: A group of three jade dragon form pendants, late Spring and Autumn period, circa 570-476 BCExpert remark: The first pendant in the lot is part of a closely related group of archaic jades that includes our pendant. While the color of the chosen stone is just as attractive, there is a clear demarcation between the two pieces. Christie’s carving is clearly a work of art, but it is not accompanied by the same level of quality or beauty as our pendant. It is also worth noting the placement and number of suspension apertures on each of the three Christie’s pendants. Looking at the multiple examples simultaneously shows that these are later-added features, as they are either off-center or through part of the carved design, and so these features should not be taken into account when assessing such ‘pendants’ as this was not their original function.

NO. 6276/15, the rear is annotated with 26 sectors describing a weather forecast beside a letter of the alphabet, in original card box with instructions titled WEATHER FORECASTER, (2).The panel 32.5cm (12.75ins) high, 18.5cm (7.25ins) wide; the pocket forecaster 5.5cm (2.25ins) diameter.  The design of the first item in the present lot was almost certainly devised by Miss E.W. Pilkington who was the Borough Meteorologist for the area around Buxton 1923-62, and appears to be based on the principals first incorporated by Negretti and Zambra into their 'weather forecaster' patented in 1915, an example of which is also included in the lot. Negretti and Zambra's design used actual weather conditions over a ten-year period and was said to be 80% accurate by the Manufacturers. By setting the wind direction and barometer reading on the outer two scales, the weather can be forecast by reading the letter that appears within the appropriate sector in the centre of the dial taking into account whether the pressure has been rising, falling or remaining steady and the season (summer or winter).

1935 Triumph 2/1 250 OHV Twin Port Registration Number:  BHT 458 Frame Number: IR5 1470 - In current ownership since 1978 One of the first single-cylinder models designed by Val Page on joining Triumph, the 2/1 was designed to be a simple entry level machine, but in fact proved to be expensive to produce. In terms of naming, the first number relates to the capacity, the second number is the model number in the range. So 2/1 is the first model in the 250 range (whereas the 2/5 was the top of the range). The Model 2/1's engine was excellent, but as it shared much else with the 350cc range, although robust it was deemed a little on the heavy side at the time. The 2/1 was fitted with 6 volt electrics and Magdyno lighting, and an electric horn. The 3 speed gearbox could be upgraded to 4 speed for an extra 30 shillings. The model survived until the first of the new Tigers came out in 1937. First registered in March 1935 to the Bristol area of England, this 2/1 has remained in the area ever since, being in the current owner’s collection since 1978. The bike is complete and in the main original, with the exception of the oil pressure indicator. The engine (SL1936) and gearbox (L277) are believed to be original. Offered for the first time in over 45 years, this lovely machine is recorded on the VMCC register, the 2/1 is offered with a file of information and receipts.
