Leichte Altersspuren. 'Koko' kümmerte sich liebevoll um Katzenbabys, daher die Katze in der rechten Hand des Plüschgorillas.| DAKIN life-size plush gorilla, 1985, Replica of the gorilla lady 'Koko' who lived in the San Francisco Zoo (1971-2018), seated, brown plush gorilla with a gray cat in her right hand, polyester, breastplate by Dakin, seat height 83 cm. Slight signs of age.The Dakin company won a legal dispute over the name 'Koko' with the Steiff company regarding the stuffed animal. Scientists taught the real female gorilla 'Koko' about 1000 characters of a form of American Sign Language to communicate with humans. 'Koko' lovingly cared for kittens, hence the cat in the plush gorilla's right hand.

Lot 40

A VERY RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF A GIRAFFEUnsignedJapan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)The horse-like animal reclining with its hooved legs drawn underneath the body for compactness, the bushy tail sweeping around and resting against its side, the very long neck rising tall, the animal looking backwards with a charming expression, the eyes double inlaid in pale and dark horn. Note the superbly carved mane and large, asymmetrical himotoshi underneath. The well-toned wood bearing a superb, chocolate-brown patina.LENGTH 3.9 cm, HEIGHT 3.9 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor associated surface wear.Provenance: British private collection. The giraffe first came to Japan in 1907, although a stuffed specimen was displayed at the Tokyo National Museum in 1877. Japanese paintings of giraffes began earlier, from the end of the 18th century, with their source being a giraffe taken from Africa to China in 1414 and presented to the Yongle emperor. As is well-documented with the tiger in Japanese art, accurate representations of the giraffe were scarce, the only source being the aforementioned Chinese paintings, which were certainly hard to come by. It is rather unlikely the anonymous carver of the present netsuke had seen any kind of accurate representation of this unusual exotic animal, though may have heard of it through rumors or hearsay and likened it to a horse with a very long neck.

A bronze figure of a Shishimai dancerJapan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Late 19th centuryCast standing on top of bale of rice straw, wearing a large Shishi mask and cloak and holding a suzu and fan in his hand, the mouth of the mask open revealing a man’s face inside, the bale of straw opens to be used as a container.Height 37 cm.Property of a Gentleman. Catalogue note: The shishiodori or Lion dance, is a dance in which the performer wears a decorative lion head (the shishigashira). Shishimai was introduced from the Asian mainland in ancient times as part of the arts of gigaku, bugaku, and sangaku. Originally, it took the form of a dancer performing while wearing a lion costume resembling a stuffed animal. During the Kamakura and Muromachi periods it came to be performed along with sarugaku and dengaku and took on the form that can be seen today. Shishimai can be broadly divided into two-man and one-man varieties. In the former, one performer takes up the position of the head and the other the tail, thus forming a four-footed lion. There are also variations in which several performers form the body of the lion. In the latter one-man variety, a single performer plays the lion's part. This is the variety that can be seen most often in eastern Japan. Lion dances can be considered to have various ritual or symbolic functions, including the display of force to ward off evil, prayers for the protection of agriculture or for rain, harvest celebrations, and memorial services for wild animals.Provenance:Bought by the current owner at the Pan Amsterdam art fair.
