A Chinese 'Yang Zongbao and Mu Guiying' painted enamel rectangular trayQing dynasty, 18th century Finely painted with a central scene of a lady holding a spear on a fenced terrace outside a circular window, addressing a gentleman also holding a spear, the window showing a further elegant lady sitting at a table observing the two, all framed by a puce-enamelled scrolling band, the curved cavetto with shaped lotus panels set on a ground of black and gilt scrolling leaves on pale turquoise, the reverse also with four shaped medallions of puce-enamelled lotuses on a green and white ice-crackle ground, and blue-enamelled flowers to the base, 18.8cm x 29.3cm.清十八世紀 銅胎畫琺瑯‘楊宗保與穆桂英’圖紋長方盤The present lot, depicting an elegant lady and a gentleman respectively holding a halberd and a spear within an elegant terraced garden, is likely representing the famous couple from the legends of the 'Generals of the Yang family'.Brought up in the practice of Martial arts by her bandit father Mu Yu, who ruled the Muke Fortress, Mu Guiying met Yang Zongbao, the youngest scion of the famous Yang clan, when he came to the fortress demanding the Dragon-Taming Wood on order of his father, Marshall Yan Yanzhao. Having refused to relinquish the treasure, Mu fought Yang in a duel, which she won, capturing the young man, who refused to surrender and demanded death,The heroine however developed an attraction for the young warrior, to whom she made a marriage proposal, which he eventually accepted. Her future father in law, Yan Yanzhao, was none too impressed by the engagement, and ordered the execution of his youngest son. In order to save her fianceé, Mu Guiying came out of the fortress to fight Yan Yanzhao, whom she also defeated and captured, thus winning the respect of her future father-in-law, who finally gave his blessing to the union.Condition Report: Some expected areas of old cracking and sympathetic overpainting to the enamels as consistent with the medium, especially around the cavetto and to the reverse.
3 late 19th century Mahdist Sudanese spears, as collected from the field of the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. Each spear has a type written tie on label attached stating ‘Battle of Omdurman 1898. Field Marshall Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener. Three spears picked up by Captian Richard Bower (born Le Harve 8-8-1862, died 1919) and his brother Paul from the battlefield’. Each spear fits the typical patterns seen circa 1880, with one having a broad leaf shape blackened iron tip, of flattened diamond form, with this in turn being mounted on a hardwood shaft, with a hollow iron ferrule. Another example follows an elongated leaf pattern, again of flattened diamond form, and of blackened iron. The third piece has a blackened iron barbed head, with a small leaf shaped tip. Notes: it’s unclear exactly who Captain Richard Bower is and which regiment he served in. There is a Lt R L Bower mentioned in the Army Lists of 1882, as part of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th battalion Rifle Brigade, with subsequent mentions into the 20th century as he moved through the ranks. The 2nd Bt Rifle Brigade were known to have served at Omdurman, so this is a possibility. The Bower family had several generations that served in the British Army, in the 19th and 20th centuries, and these spears have been passed down to the current family member, and have never been offered for sale previously. Approximately 179cm length to the longest example, the smallest being 165cm in length. Condition: generally solid throughout, but with age and service wear. The largest of the spears has age cracking to the wooden shaft, and a little light surface corrosion to the head. The other 2 examples have some small losses to the wooden shafts, but are solid. The blackened iron heads also have a little old surface corrosion. The labels will post date 1919, and would appear to date from around the mid 20th century.
