A pair of Italian gilt-bronze models of Furietti Centaurs, After the Antique, second half 18th century, The first depicting a bearded figure with arms bound behind his back, the second depicting a youth raised in celebration, on a modern plinth, the front foot of one centaur is broken and detached, 52.5cm and 45.5cm high (2)Literature: F. Haskell and N. Penny, Taste and the Antique - The Lure of Classical Sculpture 1500-1900, London, 1981, pp.178-179, figs. 91 and 92.Footnotes: Note: The original marble versions of these bronzes were discovered during excavations in 1736 by Monsignor Furietti at Hadrian's Villa. Their decorative qualities offered copyists great possibilities for production in small-scale bronzes. Thus the latter part of the 18th century and the start of the 19th saw them produced in large numbers, both as miniature bronzes and life-size marble and plaster versions. The desirability of the originals was so great that in 1763 Pope Benedict XIV offered Furietti a Cardinal's hat for them, while in 1765 the English offered vast sums before they were finally secured by the Capitoline Museum, Rome, where they are currently housed (Haskell and Penny, loc.cit.).

Lot 159

An Italian specimen marble and micromosaic table,Attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli, early 19th century, the base late 19th century,The white marble top inset with a central circular micromosaic depicting a chaffinch guarding its nest of eggs from an inquisitive mouse, surrounded by one hundred and sixty radiating specimens arranged in concentric tapering bands edged in Marmo Nero, samples include: porfido verde serpentino antico, Egyptian alabaster, porphyry, black granite, labradorite, amazonite, rhodonite, bloodstone, malachite, lapis lazuli, amethyst and various jaspers and agates, within a verde antico border on a Regency style polychrome decorated faux marble base with triform foliate scroll supports, overall - 74.5cm high, 134cm diameter; the micromosaic - 26.3cm diameterLiterature: Anna Maria Massinelli, Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1836), Maestro di stile e di mosaic, Florence, 2018, pp.230-231, pp. 297-298, figs. 256 a, b, 353, 354.Footnotes:Note: Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1836) trained as a sculptor and painter but by 1775 he was already known for his work in micromosaic, a medium which he is credited with advancing.  Through the work of the chemist Alessio Mattiloi, Raffaelli was able to create tiny tesserae made from spun enamel of extremely fine quality which allowed for the creation of complex compositions.  Working from both his studio in the Piazza di Spagna and the Vatican workshops in Rome, his gallery became a place of pilgrimage for sophisticated European aristocrats on their Grand Tour.Following the French occupation of Rome in 1797, Raffaelli transferred his workshop to the Milanese Court of Eugene Bonaparte.  However, the collapse of the Court in Milan saw Raffaelli return to Rome between 1815-20, and set up his flourishing workshop in the via del Babuino.Alongside his intricate and acclaimed micromosaics, Raffaelli was also fascinated with the mineral world and was a highly accomplished lapidary artist, using sophisticated combinations of marbles, jaspers and semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli, amethyst and malachite to create stunning table tops.  The present lot can be almost certainly be attributed to Raffaelli combining as it does his genius in the techniques of both micromosaic and hardstone in a beautiful, harmonious design. The central circular scene in the micromosaic of the present lot with a chaffinch guarding its nest of eggs from a mouse can be directly compared with one of a pair of panels by Raffaelli sold by Sotheby’s, Pelham, The Public and the Private, 8 March 2016, lot 142, with provenance to Hamilton Palace, showing an identical scene alongside a second panel with a goldfinch and a serpent.  Further comparisons can also be drawn to a plaque in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, and another in the Palazzo Borromeo, Borromeo Islands.  In all three of these panels the tree is lacking a further trunk on the far left which is part of the design of the present lot.  In addition, there is an inkwell in the Wallace Collection, London, which includes a medallion of the same picture but lacking the nest of eggs.  Close examination reveals in all these examples, including the present lot, Raffaelli’s trademark device to outline his birds and animals with white, rectilinear tesserae. The rich range of specimen marbles in the present lot can be compared with a table by Raffaelli sold Sotheby’s, Kentshire, New York, 18 October 2014, lot 156, with provenance to The Hon. John and Lady Augusta Kennedy-Erskine; and also a table at Trinity College, Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum (Massinelli op.cit p. 298).  A further table, not fully attributed to Raffaelli, is at Ickworth House, Suffolk, and displays the same arrangement of specimen marbles surrounding a central micromosaic of The Doves of Pliny (NT 850351).  The outer border with a band of verde antico marble in both the Kennedy-Erskine and Ickworth House table tops are identical to the present lot. While the base of the current table appears to be a later association, the ornamental scheme of the top combining a stunning lapidary palette with the intricate micromosaic can be attributed to the distinctive production of Raffaelli.

The auction will begin at 2:00PM BST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Widely considered to be the best artwork of Marilyn Monroe, Tom Chantrell's beautifully designed British Double-Crown for Bus Stop (1956) perfectly captures the "Blonde Bombshell" at the height of her fame following The Seven Year Itch (1955). In the film, stubborn but naive rodeo cowboy Beauregard "Bo" Decker (Don Murray) falls in love with cafe singer Cherie (Monroe), who dreams of travelling to Hollywood to become famous. Thinking he must make her his wife, Bo forces Cherie on a bus back to his hometown of Montana, but things don't quite go according to plan. This role was considered a little less glamorous than Monroe's previous onscreen characters and saw a change in her acting career. It is a captivating and enchanting poster featuring the iconic movie star that rarely comes to market.20" x 30" (56 x 76 cm)Condition: Very FineConservation linen-backed with border restoration and scattered restoration where needed.Artist: Tom Chantrell£1000 - 2000VAT Status: M

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) - UK Quad (Local), 1974Bidding for this lot will end on Thursday 30th May. The auction will begin at 2:00PM BST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has become one of the most debated films of all time, bringing (at the time) nauseating, forceful horror to the screen with a focused realism that was new to mainstream cinema. Arguments raged as most councils and cinemas across the country banned its release, with only a handful of cinemas eventually bowing to public demand and showing the film. The extremely limited release resulted in two versions of a poster being produced (both of which are incredibly rare): an X certificate for "LONDON" cinemas and an X certificate for "LOCAL". The example offered here is from a "LOCAL" screening. With a design by FEREF unique to the British release, it features one of the horror genre's most memorable images from perhaps the most influential cult horror film of the modern era.40" x 30" (102 x 76 cm)Condition: Fine-Folded with handling and edge wear with multiple pinholes in each corner. There's tape in the bottom left corner, some staining along the bottom border as well as some small areas of surface paper scuffs.Artist: FEREF£300 - 600VAT Status: M

F. S. GEARY. 2/Hamps. The second son of Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Le Guay Geary, K.C.B., he was born in February 1874 and educated at the United Services College, Westward Ho, and at the Royal Military Academy. He was commissioned into the Hampshire Regiment in October 1894 and promoted Lieutenant in August 1897. The 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment did not form part of the original Army Corps sent to South Africa in 1899 because it had insufficient men to make it up to war establishment. It did, however, contribute 35 men to the Mounted Infantry, under the charge of Lt. Geary, who therefore proceeded to South Africa in advance of his Regiment (in October 1899) and saw considerable action there. It was during an ambush against a British cavalry brigade that he was "killed in a gallant stand against overwhelming odds."

The other wounded man appears to have been 25401 Corporal Evi Feben, who died of his wounds on the following day. According to family tradition the observing station was situated in a barn, and Captain Geary suffered serious injuries in rescuing Feben, who was trapped by a fallen and burning beam. The recipient was promoted Major on the 26th July 1915. His D.S.O. was gazetted in the 14th January the following year and he was invested with it by the King at Buckingham Palace on the 14th April 1917. (to be found on page 57 of the edition published in New York by G.H. Doran, 1922).

A Second World War and later group of six comprising Distinguished Service Cross dated 1940 (hallmarked London 1940 Garrard & Co), 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star and Africa Star with North Africa 1942-43 clasp, War Medal with Mentioned in Despatches Oak Leaf and Naval General Service Medal 199-1962 with Palestine 1945-48 Clasp, named to Lt. Cdr I.N.D. Cox D.S.C. R.N. Mounted as worn. With accompanying miniatures. Mounted as worn in a glazed frame. Ian Nagel Douglas Cox (1915-1990) rose quickly through the ranks of junior officer, Midshipman from 1st September 1933, Sub Lieutenant 1st October 1936, Lieutenant 1st Jun 1938 and Acting Lieutenant Commander from 1st May 1945, Lieutenant Commander in June 1946 before retiring on medical grounds in 1951, to a life of chicken farming outside Chichester in Sussex. He was consistently rewarded for his courage during the War, his D.S.C. for gallantry during active operations against the enemy at sea, on this occasion for his part in the evacuation at Dunkirk in 1940 on board H.M.S. Malcolm (Gazette 27th August 1940 p 5218). He was Mentioned in Despatches no fewer than three times in September 1942, May 1943 and November 1944. H.M.S. Malcolm (D19/I19) was a Scott-Class Destroyer built for the Royal Navy during the First World War, launched in May 1919 she missed the Great War but saw much service during the Second. Active during the evacuation of the Netherlands. At Dunkirk she made eight runs between Dunkirk and England, her Captain Sir Thomas Halsey being rewarded with the D.S.O. for 'good services in the withdrawal of Allied Armies from the Beeches of Dunkirk'. Halsey's report of the activities between the 28th May and 3rd June tell of the taking in the region of 4,400 men off the beaches and others from stricken vessels and out of the sea. The frenetic activity of these days resulted in a collision with a French Trawler, a heavy collision with A pier at Dunkirk and the constant threat from shells, mines, machine guns and other damaged vessels. Despite the events Halsey was fulsome in his praise for his men, in particular the Officers and Petty Officers whose fine example kept the men motivated and busy during times of extreme exhaustion. Of the 4,400 or so men they rescued there were some 800 French troops, apparently the extremely large packs they carried made it harder to take more than this number. Cox's award suggests he was one of the Officers that played a key role in the fine work that the ship and her crew undertook in rescuing the men from the French beeches. A recorded reminiscence on the BBC Archive by Mechanic F.C. Turner recalls the events of the evacuation, rescuing men from the burning Clan McAlister, near misses from German bombers on several occasions and the concerted effort that the Royal Navy made to get the men home to safety. Cox went on to serve on a number of other ships including H.M.S. Lupin, H.M.S Airdeale and H.M.S Woolston, taking command of H.M.S. Middleton, an Escort Destroyer between January 1944 and June 1945. An earlier, less fortunate ship was H.M.S. Welshman (M84) a Minelayer of 2650 tonnes which was sunk by torpedo off Tobruk by German submarine U-618 on the 1st of February 1943. As is so often the case the casualties were extensive with the loss of 155 lives from a complement in the region of 252. Lt Cdr Cox was one of the survivors who was rescued from the sea by Destroyers Tetcott or Belvoir. He later recalled that whilst struggling in the water and when he could see that so many of his colleagues were perishing around him, he was determined to survive so that he might meet his son, Jeremy, who had been born the previous September, and who he had not yet met. His last command was H.M.S. Virago a V-class destroyer. It is conceivable that Douglas Cox was entitled to a second award bar to his D.S.C. The London Gazette records the bar to the award on the 16th August 1940, p5064. Offered for sale by a direct descendant of the recipient. *CR As worn, ribbons slightly grubby.

An early 18th Century medal commemorating the Siege of Lille, 1708, part of the War of Spanish Succession. (1701 - 1714). The obverse with a fine depiction of the building of the tower of Babel surrounded by five smoking furnaces and with numerous fighting figures to the foreground, The legend 'Confvndamvs lingvam eorvm vt non avdiat vnvsqvisqve vocem proximi svi' (Let us confound their language, that they may not understand one another's' speech) A line from Genesis XI. 7. To the exurge 'Ryssel vel insulae per principem evgenlum Ob: Sessa 22 Aug et 23 Oct Recepta 1708'. (Rysssel, or Lille, besieged by Prince Eugene August 22nd and retaken October 23rd 1708). Reverse with the bombardment of the walled city of Lille with the Citadelle to the right, guns and fired shot clearly depicted in the foreground, with a sun and crescent moon to the sky. With legend above 'Siste Sol in Gibeon et Luna in Valle Aialon' (Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon, and thou Moon, in the valley of Ajalon) again a biblical line from Hoshua X. 12. To the exurge 'Castellum Rysel Obses: sun xxvii Oct Receptum Vero IX Dec' (The Citadel of Lille besieged 27th October, but was taken back on the 9th December). The rim with raised lettering 'Vnita Virtus Valet' (United valour prevails). 4.9 cm, c. 37.38g. This medal depicts the Siege of Lille which occurred between the 12th August and 10th December 1708 during the War of the Spanish Succession. Following hard fought defence of 120 days of the French garrison at Lille commanded by marshal Boufflers, surrendered to the forces of the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene. An action which cost the allies some 16,000 lives but saw them regain control of northern Flanders. The reference to the Tower of Babel refers to the confusion caused by Vendome and the Duke of Burgundy whose lack of cooperation was disastrous to the French. The sun and moon are France and her allies, Louis XIV being known as the Sun King. The legend on the rim refers to the cooperation between Marlborough and Eugene on this and other occasions. With old catalogue cuttings. An example of this medal is recorded in Medallic Illustrations of British History, British Museum 1885, Vol II Queen Anne No.170 (page 339-340). The British Museum's example was given to the museum in 1825 by King George IV having previously belonged to George III. It has museum number G3,FD.298. This volume records one other example in the collection of the Ducal museum in Gotha, Germany. The medal is described as very rare. *CR As struck with attractive light tone. An excellent and beautiful example of a rare historic medal.

Roger Sandeforth Streatfeild (12/4/1918 - 6/12/1980) was the second son of the Reverend C.A.C. Streatfeild, Rector of Symondsbury, Bridport. His was a busy and highly decorated military career rising from a Pre-War 2nd Lieutenant and War Substantive Lieutenant on the 1st of January 1941 to Brigadier in 1964. With gallantry awards whilst fighting in North Africa and Italy he went on to a senior role as Commander of the School of Artillery. After school at Marlborough College he attended Pembroke College, Cambridge where he studied Mathematics and Law graduating MA in 1943. Following his education he immediately joined the Army. It was only a matter of months before he won his first Military Cross whilst fighting in Tunisia as part of a well recorded three day action at Djebel Bou Aoukaz,a 700 ft hill that had been taken by the Irish Guards, and during which heavy casualties were taken. The citation reads: For outstanding courage and devotion to duty during the whole of the period of the attack and consolidation by 24 Guards Brigade from 23rd April to 4th May 1943. As Battery Commander, 96/97 Field Battery R.A., was in support of, and during this period liaised continuously in person with O.C. 1 Bn Irish Guards to whom he was of great assistance during a very unpleasant time under very heavy fire. After 1Bn Irish Guards captured Hills 212 and 214, he remained up on the hills, where he was always exposed to every type of danger, and played a conspicuous part in the Inf defence against constant enemy attacks. At one time, he was in command of the remnants of No. 1 Coy whom he led with great daring and zeal, and all these men were extremely happy at being under his command. He was cool, cheerful and heedless of danger during the whole proceedings and was a great example to the men with whom he was associated. A couple of more 'anecdotal' accounts are included with the lot, not least one by Streatfeild himself and, Lieutenant Colin Kennard, grandson of Col T.A. Colfox of Symondsbury Manor who was well known to the Streatfeild family, who won a D.S.O. for this action. In a letter to Streatfeild's Mother Kennard described Roger as 'I can truthfully say that I have more admiration for him, than any other man I met during the campaign .. When all No 1 company's officers had been killed and wounded he took over command of the company and he proved to be a constant source of inspiration, energy, zeal and amusement to us all ... The men took an instant liking to hi, (very rare in our type of Irishman) and would do anything for him ... it was a wonderful sight to see him joking with them and keeping them in fits of laughter at such a time of strain. Roger was responsible more than anyone for the great success No 1 company had in destroying wave after wave of German infantry attacks. His second award was in February 1944 when Captain Streatfeild was serving in Italy, during the fighting from the 26th Jan to 3rd Feb he performed his duties with extreme skill and nerve and never allowed any danger to interfere with the performance of his particular task and he was on all occasions a tower of strength in getting the artillery co-operation which I required. Lt Col C.A. Montagu-Douglas-Scott chose the events of the 4th Feb for the recommendation: During the morning of the 4th Feb our positions were seriously threatened by the enemy who had direct observation of our Bn HQ and were shelling it with 88-mm guns. BN HQ were ordered to withdraw and contact the Scots Guards, as this decision was made, Major Streatfeild's O.P. had a direct hit. He was wounded himself and also his two wireless operators and his car was put out of action. Although wounded he continued to man the wireless himself calling for smoke to cover our withdrawal. This smoke proved most useful to us. Major Streatfeild moved with Bn HQ and with them was captured in a small gulley before contact could be made with the Scots Guards. Shortly afterwards he escaped and along with four other officers and about a dozen men began to fight he way back to our lines, and eventually managed to reach some of our carriers. It was decided to make a dash through the positions now held by the enemy in three of these carriers. Major Streatfeild drove the second one, and stopped on the way to pick up Major Sir Ian Stewart-Richardson, who was badly wounded. ... Never once did Major Streatfeild complain of his wound. ... His initiative was largely responsible for making good the escape of the other officers and men who came with him. (Gazetted 15th June 1944 p2852). Peactime saw continual rise through the ranks and eventually, as a Brigadier he was commandant of the United Kingdom's School of Artillery at Larkhill. In later civilian years Brigadier Streatfeild was a well respected county councilor and chairman of Oxfordshire Education Committee 'A tough no nonsense man determined to do his very best for the county's education. With copies of the London Gazette 21/9/43 confirming the MC and 5/11/1957 confirming Brevet Lt-Col. Commissions 27th August 1938 Second Lieutenant and 6th Feb 1946 Rank of Lieutenant. Letter confirming promotion to Lt-Col from March 28th 1961. Married to Edith Mary Streatfeild in 1942. *CR Medals as issued and worn. 'The Earth' by C. Abel Klinger, Nuremberg, [circa 1860] A miniature globe in original box Exceptionally well preserved, with rich colours and crisp details, minimal scuffing and no loss of paper, housed in original box with a pictorial paper label pasted to the lid, rubbed to base and edges, in a scarce condition, rare to the UK market, C. Abel Klinger, Nuremberg, [c.1860]Art dealer and engraver Johann Georg Klinger (1764-1806) was the last great Nuremberg globe-maker. On Klinger's death, the firm was run by his widow under the title of Klingers Kunsthandlung. In 1831, control passed to engraver Johann Dreykorn who worked in co-operation with engraver Johann Adam Bühler (1813-1870), and with Johann Bernhard Bauer (1752-1839). During this period, the globes continued to be issued under the name of Klingers Kunsthandlung, although some bore the names Klinger, Bauer. In 1852, however, when merchant Carl Abel became manager of the firm, the title was changed to Abel and Klinger's Art Shop before becoming more simply C. Abel Klingers Kunsthandlung. The latter half of the nineteenth century saw Klinger globes being issued in a variety of languages (including, as here, in Dutch) in an attempt to obtain a share of the European market. The firm was eventually dissolved after World War I. This is in a fine condition. There are a couple of infinitesimal spots around the title; an uncoloured, very small, between to sheets, in the seem, running through Africa. The globe has an approximately 10cm diameter; with the box measuring 11cm high and 11.5cm in diameter.

* Mosquito. Propeller tip attributed to Mosquito XVI NS795, the aircraft piloted by Flying Officer Raymond Morris Hays DFC and his Navigator Flight Sergeant Morgan Phillips, 544 Squadron were on a photo-reconnaissance sortie on the 16 March 1945 when their aircraft was attacked by enemy aircraft resulting in severe cannon and flak damage, Hays being awarded an immediate DFC, the propeller with yellow tip and severe damage, 77 cm longQTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: The propeller tip was purchased from an online auction. According to correspondence provided by the vendor the seller explains that she lived next door to Morgan Phillips as a child and he was a family friend. The seller then bought Phillips's house after he passed away and his "war items" were left in the house. The seller also provided a black and white photograph of Phillips in civilian clothes and also remembers a Phillips and "German pilot Rolf" meeting up after the war. It seems likely that this propeller tip was a war souvenir given to Phillips and once hung on his wall.An extract supplied by the vendor is included. 'A photo-reconnaissance sortie was made on 16 March by a Mosquito from No 544 Sqn RAF. The Mosquito XVI NS795, was flown by Flg Off R M Hays and Flt Sgt M Phillips based at RAF Benson. The squadron's operations log book recorded; Gotha and Lutzendorf targets photographed then attacked by three Me 163s. Aircraft shot up and landed Lille.' This brief entry was also in more detail; 'Flg Off R M Hays DFC and Flt Sgt M Phillips had targets at Gotha, Chemitiz and Lutzendorf. Subsequently, Lutzendorf and Gotha were claimed. At 1145 hrs, flying 30,000 feet making a photographic run (with the navigator in the nose of the aircraft) on course 090 degrees over Leipzig, the pilot saw two Me 163s practically at ground level and climbing rapidly. The pilot altered course 90 degrees and opened up fully. 'Within three to five minutes both enemy aircraft were at Mosquito height (30,000 feet) and split up, one to starboard and one to port and slightly above, from which positions they attacked the Mosquito simultaneously on either beam. The pilot did a half-roll and dived vertically, attaining an IAS of 480mph pulling out at 12,000 feet. The pilot then saw that three Me 163s were attacking, one either beam approximately 500 yards from the Mosquito and the third the same distance astern, and all enemy aircraft slightly above. The pilot did not see the enemy aircraft fire but the navigator did... as the Mosquito levelled off at deck level the pilot saw his starboard engines smoking and without power - presumably as a result of a hit by cannon shells from the Me 163s. This engine was then feathered and the pilot climbed to 2000 feet ... after approximately 30 to 40 minutes flying the navigator saw a single Me 109 approaching from 1000 yards astern ... The Mosquito then dived to deck level again and then flew up and down valleys ... during this evasive action the Me 109 lost sight and made no further contact. Approximately 45 minutes later the Mosquito crossed a small unidentified town and experienced intense flak - the Mosquito sustained hits and the navigator was injured in the foot. Shortly afterwards the pilot again climbed to 2000 feet to clear high ground and to take advantage of three-tenths/five-tenths prefrontal cloud (Cu). After flying for 30 minutes American C-47s and gliders were seen on the ground ... and the pilot decided to carry on... Mayday calls were made on all channels without result... the pilot was unaware that the starboard tyre was punctured by cannon shells and as soon as he touched down the aircraft swung violently to starboard, both port and starboard undercarriage legs collapsed, and the Mosquito was severely damaged. Inspection of the aircraft revealed damage by cannon shells - presumably from Me 163s . One shell passed through the starboard engine nacelle, another through the starboard engine near the boss ...A flak shell also hit the blade of the starboard propeller, spraying the fuselage and starboard engine with fragments.Flying Officer R M Hays was awarded an immediate DFC for this actionDFC London Gazette 24 April 1945 "This officer was the pilot of an aircraft detailed for a reconnaissance covering the Leipzig area in March 1945. Whilst over the target, two enemy fighters attempted to close in. Pilot Officer Hays took violent evading action. Much height was lost. At this stage another enemy aircraft joined the fight. Pilot Officer Hays manoeuvred with great skill and although his aircraft was hit he succeeded in evading the attackers. The starboard engine had been badly damaged but course was set for home. Later on the return flight the aircraft was attacked by another fighter. Pilot Officer Hays manoeuvred with superb skill. Although the aircraft sustained further damage and the navigator was wounded, this pilot succeeded in evading the fighter. He afterwards flew to a landing ground in Allied territory. This officer, who has completed many sorties, has consistently shown courage and resolution."

In January 1900, when serving as Third Officer in the P. & O’s S.S. Assaye, he won the Royal Humane Society’s Medal in bronze for attempting to save the life of a Private in the Hampshire Regiment who had fallen overboard in Cape Town harbour. He qualified for his Certificate of Competency in 1903 and was enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant in 1907. He served in the cruiser H.M.S. Edgar, from June 1915 to May 1916 and saw active service in the Dardanelles. He subsequently commanded the Queen Victoria until the end of the War, gaining a mention in despatches in the Aegean for the period July to November 1918 (London Gazette 23 April 1919 refers). The recommendation states:‘He has rendered most valuable services as Senior Officer Net-Layers and Net-Repair Vessels and has carried out his work of net-laying and net-repairing with great skill and ability.’In June 1919, Townshend was assigned to special duties, and served as an Assistant Captain of Port / Harbour Master for six weeks at Constantinople, work that resulted in him receiving a favourable endorsement on his service record that August. He was awarded the Russian Order of St. Anne on 23 November 1920 (his service record refers) and received advancement to Commander in the following month.Placed on the Retired List in June 1922, he returned to his pre-war duties as a Master in the P. & O. Line, and won further accolades - namely the Greek Navy Medal - while in command of the Empress of India 1930-31:‘As regards the rescue of the greater part of the crew of the Greek steamer Theodoros Bulgaria in the Bay of Biscay by the Viceroy of India, under the command of Captain W. P. Townshend, the Greek Minister in London, in replying to a letter from the Guild, requests the Secretary convey to the Captain, and through him to those members of the crew who took part in the rescue work, an expression of his great appreciation of their ‘courageous and gallant action’ on this occasion. It will be remembered that the Viceroy of India picked up the S.O.S. of the Greek steamer and at once proceeded at full speed towards the position indicated. After eight hours of hard steaming through heavy seas, the liner reached the stricken ship. Captain Townshend deemed it advisable to use oil to break the force of the seas, and a lifeboat was eventually launched from the Viceroy of India under the command of the Third Officer, Mr. C. S. Cook. The distressed vessel was lying low in the water with a list of about 40 degrees, and with the sea sweeping over her. It was only with the greatest difficulty that 19 men were eventually hauled through the seas to the boat by means of a lifeline, and ultimately the remaining 13 men on board succeeded in lowering one of their lifeboats and safely reached the Viceroy of India (Lloyd’s List, 12 January 1931 refers).Townshend, who had been advanced to Captain, R.N.R. was placed on the Retired List in December 1925.Captain Townshend's full size medals (minus the Royal Humane Society medal were sold at DNW (now Noonan's) on 7 March 2007, lot 847.

* Montgomery (Bernard Law, 1887-1976), 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, British Army officer who served in the First and Second World Wars. Autograph Letter Signed, 'Montgomery of Alamein', Isington Mill, Alton, Hants, 11 October 1967, to Heim, in response to a letter and concerning the state of the nation, 'I am afraid that much of what you say is very true. The truth is that in our country today we are suffering from what I would call "A Twilight of the Spirit". At Trafalgar, Dunkirk, and Alamein, the enemy was clear and plain. Today we are confronted with a very dangerous foe - the weakness from within, by which alone great nations fall. We seem to have forgotten how to pull together, and fight our way out of the moral and economic dangers which threaten us. We live in an age of computers; but you cannot put leadership and guts into a computer! I do not entirely despair. What the country needs is a "big" man of real stature, and moral courage, to give a lead. But I do not see him in any political party - at present', written in black ink in a neat hand on personal printed stationery, 1 page, 4to, window-mounted with a photograph of four Desert Rats (including Oscar Heim) of the Eighth Army in a tank in the desert, framed and glazed, 50 x 32 cm overallQTY: (1)NOTE:A highly insightful and revealing letter, written to the owner's father Oscar Heim (1906-1994), who had been stationed in North Africa during the Second World War. At the time of this letter the Labour Prime Minister was Harold Wilson, and Edward Heath was leader of the Conservative Party. The Labour government had weathered several economic storms since coming to power in 1964. From the summer of 1967 onwards a series of events destabilised the economy, including the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War in June, leading to the closure of the Suez Canal and a subsequent sharp rise in oil and other commodity prices. However, Montgomery is striking out not simply at economics but at the state of political leadership and direction and yearning for a personality equivalent to the way he saw himself as a military leader.
