Attributed to Ernst Heinrich Barlach (Germany, 1870-1938) - An early 20th century circa 1907 untinted plaster gesso figure of woman with child (Bettlerin mit Kind) by Expressionist sculptor Ernst Barlach. Signed E. Barlach to right side of base. Measures approx. 35cm x 26cm x 32cm. The sculptures from 1906 -1908 mark the first highlight in the work of the sculptor Ernst Barlach. “Beggar Woman with Child” is the most important work in dealing with the impressions of the trip to Russia. The artist had already sketched figures and scenes of everyday life during his years of study in Hamburg, Dresden and Paris, but it was only a two-month trip through southern Russia in 1906 that led him away from the artistic goals of Art Nouveau, which had strongly influenced his early work. Even without knowledge of the customs and customs as well as the language, in the Russian villages and small towns, which were characterized by a latent revolutionary mood, the mood and intensity of the feelings of the ordinary people, which became familiar to the taciturn North German, were communicated to him. "In Russia I found this amazing unity of inside and outside, this symbolic: That's how we are as humans, all beggars and problematic existences basically. That's why I had to shape what I saw, and of course I grew among the suffering, the simple, the longing "A brotherly feeling arises from people who are longing for themselves and are therefore addicted to drinking, singing and music." (Letter dated October 6, 1920 to brother Karl Barlach, Reemtsma Collection, quoted from Eva Caspars, Ernst Barlach Haus, Reemtsma Collection, Munich n.d., p. 28). In his catalog raisonné, Friedrich Schult published a photograph by Berthold Kegebein from 1935, which shows the artist in his Güstrow workshop in front of the "Frieze der Listenenden"; He leans against a rotating work table on which there is an approx. 60 cm high version of the "Russian Beggar Woman with Child" as a wooden sculpture, which is not listed in the catalog raisonné (see illustration).

Lot 144

A 19th century folk art sailor’s woolwork picture. Portraying a fully rigged sailing ship at sea, and at the stern of the ship there is the traditional red ensign or ‘red duster’ that would imply that this is a merchant vessel. Surrounding the vessel are several National flags, including the Union Jck of Great Britain, the United States flag, the Turkish flag, the French tricolour, the Russian Navy’ s St Andrew’s flag, plus some British Royal Navy ensigns. Notes: known as ‘Woolies’ these type of handcrafted woolwork pictures were crafted by sailors in their free time. Many were already adept with a needle and thread after having to make repairs to sails and their own clothing. Many such pieces are documents of their voyages and the nations they would have encountered on their travels. Like the vast majority of woolwork pictures, the piece is unsigned. Housed in a burr walnut veneer frame with glazed front. Approximately 67.7cm x 51cm. Condition: a little fading to the colours, particularly the blue ground, but still quite vibrant to many areas. Some loose threads around the rigging area. The frame and glass are of solid construction, but there are some areas of veneer loss, and a small hole to the frame in one area.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist known for his pioneering role in the development of abstract art. Born in Moscow, Kandinsky initially pursued a career in law and economics before turning to art later in life.Kandinsky's early works were influenced by Russian folk art and the Symbolist movement, but he later developed his own distinctive style characterized by bold colors, geometric shapes, and dynamic compositions. He believed in the power of art to express inner emotions and spiritual truths, and he sought to create paintings that resonated on a deeper, more emotional level. One of Kandinsky's most famous works is "Composition VII" (1913), which exemplifies his mature abstract style. The painting features a complex arrangement of geometric shapes and vibrant colors, evoking a sense of movement, rhythm, and harmony. Kandinsky saw his abstract paintings as a form of visual music, with color and form serving as equivalents to musical elements such as melody and rhythm. In addition to his work as a painter, Kandinsky was also a prolific writer and art theorist. He wrote extensively on the spiritual and philosophical aspects of art, and he played a key role in the development of abstract art theory.Kandinsky's work had a profound influence on the development of modern art, inspiring subsequent generations of abstract artists and helping to establish abstraction as a legitimate artistic style. His bold experimentation with color and form continues to be admired for its innovation and originality, and his legacy as one of the great pioneers of abstract art endures to this day.Measures 38.0 x 53.5.

Thence by descent to his children, Monaco;  German art marketPublished: Kashi, Ceramiche islamiche dal IX al XVI secolo, Marcello Giampiccolo, 1996, p. 114Footnotes: Luigi Anton Laura (June 21, 1922 - August 3, 2007) was one of the most outstanding fine and decorative art dealers of post-war Italy. Born in San Remo to a family who could trace their lineage back to 1260, he was trained in the fine arts in Genoa, Florence and Turin, with a small interruption due to war service on the Russian Front. He was an expert connoisseur in fields as diverse as the early civilisations of Asia, the Middle East and Europe, 17th and 18th-century English and European furniture, decorative works, early Venetian painting, armour, graphic arts, textiles and much more. He opened his first shop in 1946 and his dealership sustained him, but, with his art historian wife Renate (Nera), he indulged his true passion for collecting. He travelled the world to learn about ancient cultures and to buy rare objects to add to his stock and collection. He travelled with Nera and his nieces across Asia and the Far East by Land Rover or camper van and he was a frequent visitor to London and other European cities, amassing an astonishing collection of some 6,000 diverse treasures. This collection was donated to the Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano (FAI), an organisation based on the model of the British National Trust, and is now housed in his old residence in San Remo. Laura possessed, he said, a genuine mania for owning, as well as making it possible for others to own, objects of rare interest and beauty. Almost up to the time of his death he carried on dealing with energy and enthusiasm, regarding his clients as his scholars; encouraging them to learn about the diverse objects he introduced into their homes.Condition Report: This dish is repaired and restored from multiple breaks. The breaks have been filled in. Extensive areas of repaint are noticeable to the exterior and interior along the break lines. The interior shows further scattered areas of repainting to its well, wall and lip. The foot shows minimal losses. One crack is historic and very likely appeared during the firing process.

Fabergé, a rare bowenite and demantoid carving, early 20th century, modelled as a stylised kingfisher in carved bowenite, its eyes set with circular-cut demantoid garnets, height 4.5cm, unsigned Fabergé's animal carvings are among their most celebrated creations, adored and collected by some of the most prominent figures of the early 20th century. Russia's stone carving industry centred on the city of Yekaterinburg, where Fabergé acquired the workshop of lapidary Karl Woerffels around 1884, and it was this workshop that produced the majority of them - the carvers Kremlev, Derbyshev and Svetchnikov, managed by the German Alexander Meier. The stones were carefully selected by Carl Fabergé's son Agathon, and were mostly of Russian origin, taking advantage of the rich mineral resources of the Ural mountains and Siberia. The animal carvings found immense popularity with a number of the firm's key patrons, most notably the British royal family, whose collection boasts more than 350 animals, and Léopold de Rothschild, who had his racehorses similarly immortalised by Fabergé's sculptors. While these studies were often remarkably lifelike and detailed, among Fabergé's more unusual hardstone carvings are those taking inspiration from Japanese netsuke, particularly their strikingly abbreviated, stylised depictions of birds in a style known as ittōbori (literally 'one blade carving'). In common with many collectors and artists fascinated by the new influx of Japanese art at the beginning of the 20th century, Carl Fabergé himself had personally put together a collection of these small Japanese carvings in ivory and wood, which were originally designed to suspend pouches or cases from the belts that fastened traditional Japanese dress. Perhaps the best known results of Fabergé's appreciation of ittōbori netsuke are direct copies of a popular Japanese model known as fukura suzume, depicting exaggerately round sparrows in flight. In this same simplified style but in stark contrast are Fabergé's still, watchful studies of kingfishers. The present example, in milky pale green bowenite from the Ural mountains, is among the simplest and most pared back of Fabergé's kingfisher studies, its green eyes glinting with another one of Russia's most famous gemmological exports, demantoid garnets. Kingfishers were apparently referred to by Fabergé as 'icebirds', and appeared in the ledgers when one was purchased by King Edward VII in November 1907, and another was purchased by his son, the future King Edward VIII in 1913, not long before the London Fabergé branch was forced to close and the firm's era at forefront of European jewellery design came to an abrupt end. Illustrated: Geza von Habsburg, Fabergé, Geneva, 1987, no. 307, its eyes miscatalogued as peridot For examples of Fabergé's kingfisher carvings in the Royal Collection, please see collection nos. RCIN 40387 and RCIN 40385. Lot 565

A rare Chinese rose-grisaille cup and saucer after 'Actors of the Comedie-Francaise' by Watteau, Yongzheng/Qianlong Dia.: 7,3 cm - H.: 3,9 cm (the cup) Dia.: 11,7 cm (the saucer) Provenance: - A Belgian private collection. - Acquired from an American private collection in the region of Portland, Oregon.Ref.: - The State Hermitage Museum, inventory number ГЭ-1131, for the original painting 'Les Acteurs de la Come;die-Française' also known as 'Coquettes qui pour voir' or 'La Mascarade' by the French painter Jean Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), painted in 1711-1712. By the mid-18th C., the work belonged to Louis Antoine Crozat (1699-1770), Baron de Thiers, the younger brother of the Parisian merchant and art collector Pierre Crozat. It was acquired in 1772 for Empress Catherine II of Russia and has since been among the Russian imperial collections in the Hermitage and the Gatchina Palace. Now part of the museum's permanent exhibition, it remains on display in the Winter Palace. (link) (see reference image 7) - The National Library of Spain, inventory number bdh0000144141, for the engraving by Henri Simon Thomassin (1688-1741), which probably served as the example for a smaller version as explained below. (link) (see reference image 8) - The National Academy of Lincei, Italy, inventory number S-FC53606, for a small version by an unknown publisher, which was likely sent to China where it served as the source for the design of this tea service. It was a common practice for European merchants to send small versions of large engravings (mostly after important paintings) to the Chinese workshops, to have them reproduced on porcelain. (link) (see reference image 9) - A single cup of this service is in the Lurie collection. Given the rarity of this design we can assume that only one service was ordered and/or made it back to Europe. It was likely a French command, possibly from the entourage of the brothers Pierre and Louis Antoine Crozat. Pierre was one of the principal advisors to Philippe II, Duke of Orle;ans, and it was only after his death in 1740 that his collection passed to his younger brother, Louis Antoine, Baron de Thiers. After his death in 1770, the work found its permanent home in Russia through a sale brokered by the famous philosopher Denis Diderot, a prominent figure during the Age of Enlightenment. Our sincere thanks to Will Motley and Peter Greendyke for their kind help with the description of this lot.

His book "Concerning the Spiritual in Art" (1910) is a seminal text that discusses the connections between art, spirituality, and emotion. He moved from representational art to increasingly abstract and geometric compositions.
