Ø A FINE AND RARE WHALEBONE MODEL OF A WHALING SHIP, CIRCA 1820the 19in. hull with uninterrupted planks with copper pins, baleen sweep ports, scrimshaw-lined stern and quarter lights, marine ivory bust-length female figurehead, chainplates with marine ivory deadeyes, planked flush deck with simple details including winch with ratchet, scored hatch covers, belaying rails with pins, marine ivory capstan, carved helm with steering gear and compass box, whale tethering booms, three-section masts with standing and running rigging, bowsprit with dolphin striker and other details, loosely mounted on cradle stand to bone inlaid display base with baluster rails, contained within fine lunette glazed wooden display case, overall measurements -- 30 x 40 x 14in. (76 x 102 x 35.5cm) The Honourable Company of Master Mariners; Presented by F. E. Wilson in 1950. The planking is distinctive because only a whale can supply the length of bone needed to supply a single strake along the frames - by comparison, the more familiar models made by French prisoners of war using beef bone, have many short lengths. The other distinctive features are the two booms over the quarter lights, a feature unique to whalers as the whale carcass was too large to hoist aboard and had to be flensed whilst tethered alongside. This brought the additional advantage that unwanted fluids dispersed straight into the sea. This model also has masts made from single-turned lengths of bone, rather than being bound from a number of them, and sweep ports which are rarely seen, theoretically allowing a becalmed vessel to pursue a pod.models and base are both unsecured; rig later, several balurades loose, or re-secured, hull, fittings and mast in fine condition.

A GEORGE III MAHOGANY KNEEHOLE ARCHITECT'S DESK ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CIRCA 1780 The inset ratchet top with a section hinged to create a shelf when in the raised position, the frieze drawer with a sliding inset section above divisions, the kneehole door enclosing vertical divisions, the plinth base with concealed casters 83.5cm high, 115cm wide, 61cm deep The use of S-pattern keyholes, as displayed by this desk, is a detail is almost unique to items of furniture made in the workshop of Thomas Chippendale. In his 1768 account to Lady Shelburne, Chippendale mentioned that a commode table has 'very good spring and tumbler locks and S-bitted keys' (Gilbert, op. cit., vol. I, p. 253, and vol. II, p. 147, fig. 267). The intriguing asymmetry of the S-shaped brass escutcheon would have been Chippendale's primary objective, though the encumbrance would also have minimally increased the level of security of the lock. This keyhole pattern has very occasionally been recorded on furniture attributed to Chippendale's competitor John Cobb, for example on the commode sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 19 April 2001, lot 148. However, nearly all occurrences are on furniture attributed to Chippendale. Condition Report: Desk with the marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions and minor chips commensurate with age and use. Desk in generally good order overall. Leather surfaces with the expected wear, marks and creases. Key present for the cupboard door. No key present for drawers, all are open. Karrer-Hoffmann, Teufenthal, Suisse", Nußbaumgehäuse, furnierter Deckel mit Intarsien, Breite 51 cm, Walzenbreite 28 cm, spielender Zustand, ein Flügel am Geschwindigkeitshebel gelöst, fehlendes Malteserkreuz, Dämpfer überholungsbedürftig. - Literatur: David Snelling, in: "The Music Box Journal", Bd. 19, Nr. 1 (Frühjahr 1999), S. 10-12; Bd. 19, Nr. 2 (Sommer 1999), S. 36-38. August 1880 in England patentieren ließ." Start Price: EUR 180 Zustand: (3/3)Cylinder Musical Box with Patented Winding Mechanism by E. Karrer-Hoffmann, c. 1885No. 7304, playing six airs, with 104 teeth in comb (missing six treble tips), zither attachment (without tissue paper), co-axial spring, ratchet-lever with winding gear stamped: "E. Karrer-Hoffmann, Teufenthal, Suisse", walnut case and veneered and inlaid lid, wd. 20 in. (51 cm), cylinder 11 in. (28 cm), playing condition, one governor fan detached, missing Geneva stopwork, dampers in need of attention. - Literature: David Snelling, in: "The Music Box Journal", Vol. 19, No. 1 (Spring 1999), pp. 10-12; Vol. 19, No. 2 (Summer 1999), pp. 36-38. - Note: Karrer & Cie was founded by Rudolph and Hans Karrer in Teufenthal, Switzerland, in 1854. The company was dissolved in 1879. The following year, Rudolph and his wife Elise registered a new business under the name "Karrer-Hoffmann, Elise", with Rudolph as power of attorney. Snelling speculates: "There appears (…) to have been some deviousness when Rudolph dissolved Karrer & (Cie) based on the pretense that Elise was the inventor of the (winding) mechanism which she proceeded to patent in England on August 7th 1880." - The patented winding mechanism necessitated the inverted mounting of the movement seen here, with the comb at the back and the cylinder at the front, in order to allow the ratchet-lever sufficient travel without colliding against the case wall. (The right case divider has been removed to show the winding mechanism in the catalog photograph). - A very unusual movement, worthy of an overhaul. Start Price: EUR 180 Condition: (3/3)
