The foliate engraved brass sheet dial with Roman chapter ring and Arabic minute markings enclosing a signed centre and mock pendulum aperature beneath subsidiary dials for strike/silent, month calendar and days of the week fronting a substantial brass plated movement with finned baluster pillars, verge escapement and eight-day triple fusee repeating movement with fully engraved backplate and matching decoration to the pendulum cock, hour strike on a bell and 8cm pin barrel musical train with 10 hammers playing on a series of 8 graduated bells.60cm high 39cm across 28cm deepThe dial would have been silvered originally, if the post fixing bothers you it really needs sanding out and re-engraving which a good restorer could do, the case is in excellent original condition with all the original ormolu mounts, and there would have been two triangular ormolu frets to the top of the case flanking the top finial, the movement is original to case and is in good working condition chiming and Stiking on the hour and ticking away but may need a service. The clock has come from a deceased estate.

London, 18th century.Gilt lacquered case.Gilt dial, engraved, signed, visible pendulum, month calendar dials and strike cancel.Eight-day winding machine, square plate, engraved back, quarter strike on eight bells and hour strike on one.Measurements: 51 x 27.5 x 18 cm.Desk clock of bracket type, work of the watchmaker Abel Panchaud, with lacquered case with representation of garlands and festoons. Gilt-bronze appliqués flank the architectural structure with its round-arched façade. The bronze spandrels feature vegetal designs in the form of tracery. The signed dial has Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the seconds, engraved in black on gilt. Three smaller dials serve as chime and calendar functions. Decorative acorns crown the case, whose dome takes the form of a slope with rounded corners. The bronze feet are Baroque in style, curling into sensuous scrolls.Bracket clocks of English origin are notable mainly for their mechanism, but also for their decoration. This type of clock originated in the 1960s, when the pendulum was applied to the clock, replacing the previous "foliot" regulator or balance. This change made it necessary to provide the mechanism with a case to protect it from shocks that could alter its movement. This was the origin of the watches known in England as brackets, i.e. portable watches. These were short cases which housed a mechanism held between two thick plates and contained, as the driving force for each train, a combination of a hub and a snail. These clocks were originally intended to be placed on a bracket, hence their English name. This bracket was a separate piece that was usually made at the same time, with decoration to match the clock. Later, however, the base and clock began to be made separately.

A George III mahogany fusee dial wall timepieceAbel Panchaud, London, late 18th centuryThe four pillar single fusee movement with verge escapement regulated by lenticular bob pendulum and tapered plates, the 12 inch circular brass Roman numeral dial signed Abel Panchaud, Oxford Street to centre, Arabic five minutes to outer track and pinned feet to rear for securing the movement into the case, with blued steel hands set behind hinged cast ogee-profile glazed bezel, the case with ogee-moulded surround fronting dovetail jointed mahogany box incorporating door to right hand side and pendulum access flap to underside with shaped extension to the backboard behind, diameter 38.5cm (15.25ins) approx. Abel Panchaud is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London circa 1764-84. He was a fine maker with known surviving examples of his work following in the style of Thomas Mudge and William Dutton.Condition Report: Movement appears all-original with the exception of the pendulum which has been converted from a fixed-rod with short bob to one with a lenticular-bob with suspension spring driven by a crutch. The pallets appear original but have been re-faced. The dial has lost its silvering and is generally somewhat rubbed through years of polishing however all engraving is still visible. The hands are in good condition.The case appears original to the movement and dial and is generally in sound condition. The bezel is a good heavy casting which retains its hinge. The bezel is now secured via a pinned post (secured to a copper plate) passing through a hole drilled in the frame -there is evidence to both the bezel and the wooden surround of previous lock/clasp being fitted. The wooden surround has a small indent repair at 6 o'clock. The side and bottom doors appear to retain original hinges however the veneer ovelap borders (shut faces to reduce dust ingress) appear to be replacements. Case structure is otherwise in good sound condition with a few light bumps, scuffs and shrinkage commensurate with age. At some point the finish has been cleaned back and given a light re-polish hence is now lacking original colour/patination and has some domestic paint splattering.Timepiece has a pendulum but no winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

Seven various silver bowls and dishes including two Swiss silver examples by Jezler, one inscribed 'Panchaud 1967', diameter 13cm, both silver standard 800, a German sterling silver example with similar inscription, a Mexican silver pin dish modelled as a sombrero and a hallmarked silver example by WT & Co, Sheffield 1988, inscribed 'Singles Knock-Out 1988', combined approx 18.6ozt (7).

There are a few minor scratches to the dial and the hands are on the stiff side, clock at present working. The hood door showing signs of re-gluing to the side pillars together with some staining, case sides good but some veneer splitting to door frame at arch, veneer splitting at base.
