MONUMENTALE PENDULE MIT DEM SCHWUR DER HORATIER. Prévost Watteau. LilleDatierung: 1. Hälfte 19.Jh. Entwerfer/Meister: Das Modell Claude Galle. Technik: Bronze gegossen, ziseliert und matt- bzw. glanzvergoldet. Beschreibung: Hoher, rechteckiger Sockel auf vier Füßen. Schauseitig mit fein gearbeitetem Relief einer Schlachtenszene. Links des zentral aufsitzenden, rechteckigen Uhrengehäuses steht Horatius, der den Schwur seiner Söhne abnimmt und ihnen drei Schwerter entgegenhält. Die uniformierten Söhne rechts. Auf dem Gehäuse stehen drei Lorbeerkränze für den erhofften Sieg bereit. Zifferblatt mit römischen Ziffern. Großes 14-Tage-Pendulewerk mit Fadenaufhängung und Halbstundenschlag auf Glocke. Typus vergleiche S.367, Abb.5.13.5.- Tardy, Meister siehe S.537.Als Vorlage für die Pendule diente das Gemälde "Der Schwur der Horatier" von Jacques Louis David, das sich heute im Musée du Louvre in Paris befindet.Das Sujet entstammt den Erzählungen des römischen Geschichtsschreibers Titus Livius, der in seinem Werk "Ab urbe condita" von den Kämpfen der Horatier gegen die Curiatier berichtet. Im 7. Jahrhundert v. Chr. befanden sich die Städte Rom und Alba Longa im Streit miteinander. Da sich beide vor der Bedrohung von außen durch die Etrusker fürchteten, entschied man sich, die Truppen beider Lager zu schonen und einen Stellvertreterkampf auszutragen. Zu den ältesten Familien Roms gehörend, wurden die drei Söhne der Horatier als Kämpfer ausgewählt. Für Alba Longa traten ihnen die drei Brüder der Sippe der Curatier entgegen.Zwar gingen die Horatier siegreich aus dem Kampf hervor, jedoch fand die Geschichte dennoch ein eher tragisches Ende: Nur der jüngste Bruder überlebte und konnte den Gegner letztendlich durch eine List bezwingen. Danach tötete er seine Schwester, die um ihren Verlobten - einen Curatier - trauerte. Der Fall ging in die römische Rechtsgeschichte ein, da der letzte Nachkomme der Curatier aufgrund seiner Tapferkeit und Standhaftigkeit freigesprochen wurde. Vredeman de Vries, van Doetecum brothers - Castle Garden inside fortress wall / Description: This print is described by the Rijksmuseum (RP-P-1964-1642) and makes part of , a series of small architectural prints engraved by Johannes or Lucas van Doetecum , first published by Hieronymus Cock in 1562, then by Theodor Galle in 1601, and some decades later by his son Joan Galle. We see a view of a castle with a fortress wall on the left. To the right a corridor of latticework and a pavilion in front. The edition could not be established but based on the superior quality comparing to the Rijksmuseums example and the ones found elsewhere: this is certainly an early impression from 1601 or earlier. Rare in this early printing quality! / Dimensions: 15,20 x 21,00 cm / Condition: Very good impression with plate tone and ink smudges in the plate borders. Schlossscheiben-Schlagwerk für Halb- und Stundenschlag auf Glocke. Gehäuse: Imposanter, großformatiger Gehäuseaufbau in Form einer mit einem Laken überhangenen Kline, darauf eine jugendliche Frauenfigur, Allegorie der Venus, umgeben von vier Amoretten, die zur Tätigkeit der Liebesgöttin aufrufen. Die Kline prächtig gestaltet mit Löwentatzenfüßen, Draperien und Quasten, auf einem gerade ziehenden Sockel auf Spindelfüßen. Die plastische Gestaltung von hoher Qualität, nicht ohne Witz und Charme – wenn etwa einer der Amoretten sich hinter dem Laken verbirgt. Wie bei den meisten dieser französischen Pendulen ist der Entwerfer und Sculpteur nicht ermittelt worden. Zifferblatt: Das weiße Emailziffernblatt in die Draperie eingefügt, mit Bezeichnung „a Paris“, mit römischen Stunden, arabischen Viertelstunden und vergoldeten, durchbrochen gearbeiteten Zeigern.
