Small selection of four original pen, ink and blue pencil cartoons drawn and signed ('Gus') by Gus, each one page, oblong folio, n.p., February - April 1961. Each of the single panel cartoons feature John F. Kennedy, one showing the young statesman sat on the knee of French President Charles de Gaulle with the caption 'Mon cher John, vous etes maintenant un grand garcon' (Translation: 'My dear John, you're a big boy now'), another depicting him stood in a boxing ring opposite Uncle Sam, wearing boxing gloves, with the caption 'Le Nouveau Manager - Mon petit gars, si serait de toi un champion' (Translation: 'The New Manager - My boy, if I could make you a champion'), and another of Kennedy at his desk welcoming astronaut Alan Shepard home, with the caption 'Kennedy recoit le premier homme de l'espace Americain' (Translation: 'Kennedy receives America's first spaceman'). Together with Bruce Woodcock versus Lee Savold ticket, also facsimile signature, programme & photograph. Woodcock was an English light heavyweight and heavyweight boxer from Doncaster. He held the British and Empire heavyweight titles from 1945 to 1950, and was the European heavyweight champion 1946–1949 and he fought unsuccessfully for a World title in 1950. Outstanding drawing on ecru paper made with water based paint, oil sticks and crayons attributed to Neo Pop Expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Likely inspired by Basquiat's exhibition with friend and Pop artist Andy Warhol at the Palladium in 1985. The gallery exhibition poster shows them with boxing gloves in front of a bright yellow background. This artwork showcases Basquiat as a crowned boxer with royal blue trunks fighting his opponent with polka dots trunks who also bears a crown. Signed on the lower center right in black marker: Jean Michel Basquiat. Stamped on verso: This will certify that it is the oblation of the Authentication Committee of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat it is a genuine work by JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT. Randolph Turpin (British, 1928-1966), framed pair of leather boxing gloves worn by Randolph Turpin in preparation of his boxing match against the great American Sugar Ray Robinson, in a large, mounted display. Together with an original programme cover and ticket for the Middleweight Championship of the World Ray Robinson v Randolph Turpin July 10th 1951 at Earls Court London, also facsimile signature. Randolph Turpin became Middleweight Champion of the World in 1951 when he defeated Ray Robinson at Earls Court. He had a long career fighting 75 fights, 66 wins and 8 defeats – Turpin was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001. To this day he remains one of Warwickshire’s most famous citizens, with his statue stood in Market Square, Warwick. Provenance, from a family friend of the Turpin family.
