A good Second War G.M. awarded to Mr. R. E. Robinson, a Draughtsman with the Gas Light and Coke Company, for his outstanding courage and determination in attempting to rescue two men trapped in the plant house basement at the Beckton Gas Works following a severe enemy attack on the night of 19-20 April 1941 George Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue (Robert Edgcombe Robinson.) on original mounting pin, nearly extremely fine £3,000-£4,000 --- G.M. London Gazette 1 August 1941: Robert Edgcombe Robinson, Draughtsman, Gas Light and Coke Company (in a joint citation with David Craig Bertram, Deputy Station Engineer, Gas Light and Coke Company [also awarded the George Medal]; and Leslie Joseph Clark, Assistant Mechanical Engineer; James Coppin, Works Fireman; Peter James Eldridge, Dehydration Plant Attendant; and James Allen Nichols, Senior Assistant Engineer, all Gas Light and Coke Company [all awarded the British Empire Medal]) ‘A severe attack was make on a gas works and high explosive and incendiary bombs started serious fires. Steam pipes, water mains and electrical cables were fractured and barrels of tar caught fire and exploded. Gas mains flared and the blaze was fed by benzole which dripped from damaged flanges. Mr. Bertram displayed outstanding courage and leadership in dealing with the situation. He ran through the flames to shut down gas valves, put out fires on the top of a holder and made gallant efforts to rescue two men who were trapped in a plant house which had been wrecked by an explosion. Mr. Coppin was on duty in a valve-room when an explosion occurred. The premises were enveloped in steam and flames but Coppin, with no regard for his own safety, got his hoses to work and after three hours the fire was put out. He continued, throughout the night, to organise the firefighting in the works and was ably assisted by Mr. Nichols and Mr. Eldridge. These men by their coolness and courage set a splendid example to the others and worked in scorching heat while high explosive and incendiary bombs were falling. Mr. Robinson, after helping to put out a number of fires, learned that two men were trapped in a plant house which had been partially demolished by a bomb. The explosion had blown the walls outwards and caused part of the roof to cave in but Robinson got into the building and made his way to the basement where he thought the men might be. Great blocks of concrete and wrecked machinery were everywhere. He was warned that the rest of the roof was collapsing and he got out just before it did. In spite of the danger of being trapped himself, of the steam, burning gas and flaring benzole, Mr. Robinson made further attempts to get at the men but was forced to give up when the basement flooded. He displayed outstanding courage and determination. Mr. Clark was on holiday on the night of the raid but he borrowed a child's bicycle, the only one he could get, and pedalled through the raid to the Works, a distance of eighteen miles. He gave invaluable help in reorganising the damaged steam and water systems and in getting power supplies going. He has shown exceptional devotion to duty and disregard of his own safety during this and other raids.’ Robert Edgcombe Robinson was born at Shepshed, Loughborough, Leicestershire, on 9 April 1906, and was at the time of the award of his George Medal was employed as a Draughtsman with the Gas Light and Coke Company, based at the Beckton Gas Works in East London. He died in Wokingham, Berkshire, on 11 March 1985. Sold with two portrait photographs of the recipient (one in uniform); four group photographs (one of the recipient in uniform, the others of a family nature); copied Birth, Marriage, and Death certificates; and other research.

London Gazette 15 April 1916: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and coolness during enemy bomb counter-attacks. When his party was hotly pressed he ran along the parapet and dropped a bomb on the enemy squad.’ Annotated gazette states: ‘Hohenzollern Redoubt, 2 March 1916.’ Alexander John McIntosh served with the 9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers in France from 1 June 1915. The Ford Mustang 351 Cobra Jet holds a special place in the 60 year history of the Ford Mustang. Introduced in 1969 as a high-performance option, with its sleek design and formidable power, the Mustang 351 Cobra Jet quickly gained a reputation as a street racer's dream. Underneath the bonnet laid a potent 351cui Cleveland V8 engine, tuned to deliver an impressive output of over 300bhp. This robust powertrain, combined with other performance enhancements such as upgraded suspension and Ram-Air, made the 351 Cobra Jet a force to be reckoned with on both the drag strip and the open road. The car we have here is an extremely well specified Q-code example fitted with the top of the range four valve Cleveland V8 and optional ‘Ram Air Cobra jet’, a rare option which forces cold air into the engine at high revs and increases the power produced. It is also a rare factory fitted Hurst four-speed manual car with optional 3.50 Traction-Lok differential. Other optional equipment includes power steering, power front disc brakes, Mach 1 sports interior, triple sports dial console, foldable sports deck rear seats and Magnum 500 chrome wheels. A Marti report accompanies the car, confirming the original specification as Bright Red with black vinyl bucket seats, four-speed manual, as we see it today. The car was imported into the UK in 2011 by a Mr Wessell, at which point the mileage was around 34,000, which is understood to have been the genuine mileage. Many upgrades were fitted during Mr Wessells ownership including a Centreforce clutch, KYB sports adjustable shocks, performance rear leaf springs, uprated rear sway bar, MSD electronic ignition, K&N air filter and many other small upgrades. The car was then sold to a Mustang enthusiast in 2013 who would go on to keep the car until 2020. During this tenure, a further £11,932 was spent further upgrading the car, an FST 750 carburettor was fitted, the engine was removed and inspected by Williams Bros Racing who confirmed the engine had previously been rebuilt with an upgraded camshaft, Harland Sharp rockers, new lifters and pushrods. A stainless steel exhaust was fabricated with Sanderson shorty headers, 2.5” straight pipes through to 24” Cherry Bomb back boxes, which provides an absolutely incredible soundtrack. A new heater core was also fitted, a gearbox refresh was undertaken, new rear Koni shocks, a reversing camera fitted and many other smaller jobs. The car was then fully detailed and ceramic coated and now looks excellent. The car now presents in excellent order, there are a handful of paint chips here and there and a small piece of corrosion on the right side outer sill, just in front of the rear wheel area, but overall the car is truly an excellent example and ticks many boxes. The car is supplied to auction with a comprehensive history file containing the original owners manual and a copy of the original purchase invoice, a RetroFord magazine feature on the car and a V5C registration document. CAMPANIA 1944, ebonised interior with clapper staple and faintly inscribed in gothic text inside rim 25.5.52 Laurence Christopher George Millward and 8.6.1952 George William Mudford -- 12½in (32cm.) square Built by Harland & Wolff, Campania saw service towards the end of the War - her Swordfish aircraft sinking at least one U-Boat, but her main fame comes from her use as a floating exhibition at the Festival of Britain in 1951 touring the UK's ports with a civilian crew as the Festival Ship Campania to supplement the main exhibition in London. As soon as the Festival closed, she was converted for use as the HQ of Operation Hurricane, with her exhibition spaces converted to laboratories and a desalination plant, she was dispatched to witness the detonation of Britain's first atomic bomb on 3rd October 1952 at Monte Bello Islands off Western Australia. After her return to the UK at the end of 1952 she was sold, being scrapped at Blyth in 1955.The Royal Navy has long had a tradition of, when possible, christening the children of the ship's company using the ship's bell inverted as a font. Usually, their names and dates are scratch-inscribed inside the rim so it is unusual to see handsome Gothic inscriptions such as these. good original condition, lettering appears to have original black filling that is now separating, denting to front rim of bell indicating it has been rung externally, paint flaking within and christening inscriptions very faint
