Circa 1990s Vivienne Westwood ‘Westwood’ Choker Necklace, Always on Camera Collection 1992-3, with six chain supporting paste set letters ‘Westwood’, lobster claw and chain link fastening, stamped Vivienne Westwood, in original card box, together with a copy of the receipt Vivienne Westwood St Mary’s Street Manchester, dated 27 December 1995 Private Collection of Vivienne Westwood Costume The vendor was a punk in her youth and therefore was familiar with 430 Kings Road London the shop that Westwood and Mclaren established in 1971, showcasing their ‘clothes without rules’ by deconstructing traditional techniques and using them to promote their political beliefs. This love for Vivienne Westwoods tailoring and use of fabrics continued throughout her life. On the 15th June 1996 an bomb exploded in the centre of Manchester, carried out by the Irish Republican Army. This devastated the infrastructure around the area including the Arndale Shopping Centre, amazingly there were no fatalities however hundreds were injured and the cost of rebuilding ran into billions of pounds. The Vivienne Westwood shop in the locality was damaged during this and was relocated to near Deansgate. Vivienne sent up from London items off the catwalk and old stock to be sold at discounted price. The vendor as a Manchester resident was a regular visitor, and you can see picked up some fabulous purchases, some have never been worn and have been packed up for over 25 years. Couple of the stones may be slightly discoloured, slight wear overall.

A SET OF THREE VICTORIAN SILVER FIRST CHINA WAR FIGURES, HUNT & ROSKELL, LONDON, 1843/44 representing combatants of the First China War (or First Opium War, 1839-42), faithfully modelled and with a variety of surface treatments, depicting a Chinese soldier wearing a tunic of the Imperial army, with long pigtail under his pointed hat and holding a Chinese matchlock gun of the period, a Royal Marine in typical uniform, with shako and coatee, balancing a percussion musket to his shoulder, his knapsack, bayonet and cartridge box on his back, and a Royal Navy Able Seaman dressed in a straw sennet hat over 'sailor's slops' including a peacoat, striped shirt and wide trousers, a pair of pistols to his belt, originally holding a boarding pike (now lacking), all with maker's, duty and standard marks (all maker's marks of John Mortimer & John Samuel Hunt, excepting the Chinese gun with John Samuel Hunt's mark entered in 1844), each fixed by the feet to later circular stands in ebonised wood, tallest 27cm high excluding stand, 32.5cm high overallProvenance: Admiral Sir Henry Smith KCB (1803-1887); thence by family descent to the vendorOriginally these figures were mounted on the base of a massive silver candelabrum centrepiece, made for presentation to Henry Smith, at the time a captain in the Royal Navy. In March 1844 the London 'Morning Herald' reported on a quantity of presentation plate in production at Hunt & Roskell, including two silver testimonials: 'which are now to be seen at their establishment... The second testimonial is in the form of a candelabrum, recording one of the principal exploits of the late Chinese war, in which Capt. Smith, R.N., of her Majesty’s ship Druid, was the chief actor. The shaft is a plain column, wreathed with olive, and surmounted by the figure of Britannia; on the pedestal are a British sailor with a boarding pike, a marine leaning on his musket, and a Chinese soldier with his fantastical matchlock. The base is supported by dolphins, and on one side is a bas-relief representing the action between the Druid and the Chinese junks. The execution of this testimonial is no less creditable than that of the first to the skill and taste of the artists employed.’ (The Morning Herald, London, Wednesday, 6 March 1844, p.5f).Quantities of testimonial silver were produced in the 19th century, often of wonderful quality and size, but changing fashions and circumstances meant a high proportion were later consigned to auction by the descendants of the original recipients. Bought by the trade, almost invariably these large and unfashionable pieces would be melted down, the most dangerous period probably being from the 1940s to the early 60s. Although the original candelabrum seems to have disappeared, happily in this case Admiral Smith's family elected to save these figures.

There Ishbel went to school up to School Certificate level and then went on a course at a secretarial college which had been evacuated from London to Stanway House in the Cotswolds. When she had qualified and was wondering what to do next, the Principal arranged for her to attend an interview at the Interservices Research Bureau in Baker Street, London. Still just 17, she was offered a job as a secretary at Aston House - SOE Station XII - near Knebworth, in the department which designed and tested weapons and explosives for use by SOE agents in the field. After a while, Ishbel asked to be posted overseas and was advised to apply to join the FANYs (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry) which by that time was providing administrative support to SOE.Once in the FANYs, Ishbel was posted first to Massingham, the SOE headquarters in Algeria. After a few months, as the allies advanced north through Italy, she was transferred to the SOE base at Bari, in the south of Italy, and then to Rome where she worked and was billeted at the SOE headquarters at 115 Via Barnaba Oriani for the rest of the war. Back in London after the war she worked as a secretary for the BBC before getting married and moving with her new husband to Bangkok, Thailand, for seven years. The lot also includes a 5-page memoir which includes Ishbel's detailed account of active service in Algiers and Italy. Please note. Roger Sandeforth Streatfeild (12/4/1918 - 6/12/1980) was the second son of the Reverend C.A.C. Streatfeild, Rector of Symondsbury, Bridport. His was a busy and highly decorated military career rising from a Pre-War 2nd Lieutenant and War Substantive Lieutenant on the 1st of January 1941 to Brigadier in 1964. With gallantry awards whilst fighting in North Africa and Italy he went on to a senior role as Commander of the School of Artillery. After school at Marlborough College he attended Pembroke College, Cambridge where he studied Mathematics and Law graduating MA in 1943. Following his education he immediately joined the Army. It was only a matter of months before he won his first Military Cross whilst fighting in Tunisia as part of a well recorded three day action at Djebel Bou Aoukaz,a 700 ft hill that had been taken by the Irish Guards, and during which heavy casualties were taken. The citation reads: For outstanding courage and devotion to duty during the whole of the period of the attack and consolidation by 24 Guards Brigade from 23rd April to 4th May 1943. As Battery Commander, 96/97 Field Battery R.A., was in support of, and during this period liaised continuously in person with O.C. 1 Bn Irish Guards to whom he was of great assistance during a very unpleasant time under very heavy fire. After 1Bn Irish Guards captured Hills 212 and 214, he remained up on the hills, where he was always exposed to every type of danger, and played a conspicuous part in the Inf defence against constant enemy attacks. At one time, he was in command of the remnants of No. 1 Coy whom he led with great daring and zeal, and all these men were extremely happy at being under his command. He was cool, cheerful and heedless of danger during the whole proceedings and was a great example to the men with whom he was associated. A couple of more 'anecdotal' accounts are included with the lot, not least one by Streatfeild himself and, Lieutenant Colin Kennard, grandson of Col T.A. Colfox of Symondsbury Manor who was well known to the Streatfeild family, who won a D.S.O. for this action. In a letter to Streatfeild's Mother Kennard described Roger as 'I can truthfully say that I have more admiration for him, than any other man I met during the campaign .. When all No 1 company's officers had been killed and wounded he took over command of the company and he proved to be a constant source of inspiration, energy, zeal and amusement to us all ... The men took an instant liking to hi, (very rare in our type of Irishman) and would do anything for him ... it was a wonderful sight to see him joking with them and keeping them in fits of laughter at such a time of strain. Roger was responsible more than anyone for the great success No 1 company had in destroying wave after wave of German infantry attacks. His second award was in February 1944 when Captain Streatfeild was serving in Italy, during the fighting from the 26th Jan to 3rd Feb he performed his duties with extreme skill and nerve and never allowed any danger to interfere with the performance of his particular task and he was on all occasions a tower of strength in getting the artillery co-operation which I required. Lt Col C.A. Montagu-Douglas-Scott chose the events of the 4th Feb for the recommendation: During the morning of the 4th Feb our positions were seriously threatened by the enemy who had direct observation of our Bn HQ and were shelling it with 88-mm guns. BN HQ were ordered to withdraw and contact the Scots Guards, as this decision was made, Major Streatfeild's O.P. had a direct hit. He was wounded himself and also his two wireless operators and his car was put out of action. Although wounded he continued to man the wireless himself calling for smoke to cover our withdrawal. This smoke proved most useful to us. Major Streatfeild moved with Bn HQ and with them was captured in a small gulley before contact could be made with the Scots Guards. Shortly afterwards he escaped and along with four other officers and about a dozen men began to fight he way back to our lines, and eventually managed to reach some of our carriers. It was decided to make a dash through the positions now held by the enemy in three of these carriers. Major Streatfeild drove the second one, and stopped on the way to pick up Major Sir Ian Stewart-Richardson, who was badly wounded. ... Never once did Major Streatfeild complain of his wound. ... His initiative was largely responsible for making good the escape of the other officers and men who came with him. (Gazetted 15th June 1944 p2852). Peactime saw continual rise through the ranks and eventually, as a Brigadier he was commandant of the United Kingdom's School of Artillery at Larkhill. In later civilian years Brigadier Streatfeild was a well respected county councilor and chairman of Oxfordshire Education Committee 'A tough no nonsense man determined to do his very best for the county's education. With copies of the London Gazette 21/9/43 confirming the MC and 5/11/1957 confirming Brevet Lt-Col. Commissions 27th August 1938 Second Lieutenant and 6th Feb 1946 Rank of Lieutenant. Letter confirming promotion to Lt-Col from March 28th 1961. Married to Edith Mary Streatfeild in 1942. *CR Medals as issued and worn. * Montgomery (Bernard Law, 1887-1976), 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, British Army officer who served in the First and Second World Wars. Autograph Letter Signed, 'Montgomery of Alamein', Isington Mill, Alton, Hants, 11 October 1967, to Heim, in response to a letter and concerning the state of the nation, 'I am afraid that much of what you say is very true. The truth is that in our country today we are suffering from what I would call "A Twilight of the Spirit". At Trafalgar, Dunkirk, and Alamein, the enemy was clear and plain. Today we are confronted with a very dangerous foe - the weakness from within, by which alone great nations fall. We seem to have forgotten how to pull together, and fight our way out of the moral and economic dangers which threaten us. We live in an age of computers; but you cannot put leadership and guts into a computer! I do not entirely despair. What the country needs is a "big" man of real stature, and moral courage, to give a lead. But I do not see him in any political party - at present', written in black ink in a neat hand on personal printed stationery, 1 page, 4to, window-mounted with a photograph of four Desert Rats (including Oscar Heim) of the Eighth Army in a tank in the desert, framed and glazed, 50 x 32 cm overallQTY: (1)NOTE:A highly insightful and revealing letter, written to the owner's father Oscar Heim (1906-1994), who had been stationed in North Africa during the Second World War. At the time of this letter the Labour Prime Minister was Harold Wilson, and Edward Heath was leader of the Conservative Party. The Labour government had weathered several economic storms since coming to power in 1964. From the summer of 1967 onwards a series of events destabilised the economy, including the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War in June, leading to the closure of the Suez Canal and a subsequent sharp rise in oil and other commodity prices. However, Montgomery is striking out not simply at economics but at the state of political leadership and direction and yearning for a personality equivalent to the way he saw himself as a military leader.

the map showing the Danish Islands of Funen (Fyn), Aero, Alsen and Langeland, and bordering areas of Layland, Zeeland and Jutland, well framed and glazed, overall size 19½ x 21½in. (49.5 x 54.7cm.).* Denmark had declared war in the summer of 1657 while the Swedish King and his army were in Poland. Carl Gustav swiftly marched towards Denmark and occupied the duchies of Holstein and Schleswig, and invaded Jylland (Jutland). After capturing the fortress at Frederiksodde in Jylland in October, Carl Gustav crossed the frozen Little Belt to the island Fyn (Funen) on January 30th. Fyn was easily taken, and from his headquarter in Odense, the King sent out patrols to investigate the ice between Fyn and Sjælland (Zealand). The ice proved to be solid between the islands Langeland south of Fyn and Lolland south of Sjælland. The King gathered his troops on Langeland, and on February 6th, the army crossed the Great Belt. A few days later, it arrived in Sjælland, taking the Danish king and army by surprise. In the Treaty of Roskilde (March 8th), Denmark was forced to cede Scania and other ancient Danish and Norwegian territories to Sweden.

* BILL WRIGHT RSW RGI DA (SCOTTISH 1931 - 2016), THE INCOMING TIDE watercoloour on paper, signed mounted, framed and under glass image size 30cm x 43cm, overall size 54cm x 64cm Note: Bill Wright's talent first became evident when he was a boy, drawing endlessly for amusement while bedbound with illness. He went on to study painting at Glasgow School of Art and became an award-winning watercolourist, constantly inspired by was seascape and ever-changing sky on the Kintyre peninsula where he had a second home. Glasgow-born Wright, the son of a shipyard plater, was brought up in Partick and started his schooling at the city’s Dowanhill Primary before being evacuated to Dunoon during the Second World War. After returning home he attended Hyndland Senior Secondary and despite being discouraged by his parents, who would have preferred him to have a “proper job”, in 1949 he began his studies at Glasgow School of Art. They were interrupted by national service – a duty he felt hindered the progression of his art career. He served at Catterick army garrison but was a pacifist who abhorred war and dismissed the opportunity to be promoted to Sergeant as an army career held no interest. His first teaching post was at East Park School in Glasgow’s Maryhill. He then moved in 1965 to St Patrick’s High School in Dumbarton where he spent two years before becoming art adviser for the area at the age of 36. Over the next two decades he fostered the idea of instilling a cultural interest in art among pupils. He formed working groups to reform teaching of first and second-year students, encouraged forward-looking principal teachers and recruited many young teachers. His ethos was that teachers were not just there to create artists but to give all children a good art experience. He also established a residential art course for school children, at the Pirniehall residential educational facility at Croftamie in Dunbartonshire, where youngsters from different backgrounds could investigate the idea of furthering an art career through experiencing a range of different mediums in an art camp environment. And he is said to have been instrumental in encouraging the implementation of Scotland’s Standard Grade art and design qualification. However, he suffered from the chronic arthritic condition ankylosing spondylitis which, by the age of 55, forced him to take early retirement from his post in the education department of Strathclyde Regional Council. Meanwhile, as he had strived to enthuse youngsters with his own passion for art, he had been elected, in 1977, to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. A member of the Glasgow Arts Club for many years, he was also an elected member of the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and Paisley Art Institute, served as president of the Scottish Artists’ Benevolent Association for 14 years and was a Scottish Arts Council lecturer, touring the country discussing art. But perhaps his own greatest inspiration was the view from a cottage he stumbled upon half a century ago, seven miles from Campbeltown on the Mull of Kintyre. He rented the property at Bellochantuy and set up a studio there where he drew on the vistas stretching 180 degrees, encompassing sea, beach, rocks and sky. He was utterly smitten by the area and was ultimately bequeathed the cottage by the owner who had become a close family friend. Over the years he came to know the area intimately and was fascinated by the constantly changing moods of the sea and light of the sky which formed the majority of his output. One large body of work, "Towards Islay", focused on the view from the back of the cottage. He captured the patterns and waves of the sea, sometimes adding a bird, limpit, mermaid’s purse, rock lines or some seaweed. But at times his works were very abstract and symbolic, concentrating on themes of nature and transience. He was hung in all the major shows in Scotland and in galleries across the country from Aberdeenshire to Edinburgh, Glasgow and south of the border. His work also features in public collections of Stirling and Strathclyde Universities, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and the Educational Institute of Scotland. And he was recognised with The Laing Prize for Landscape and Seascape and the RSW’s Sir William Gillies Award.

* JAMES WATT RGI (SCOTTISH 1931 - 2022), INVERARY oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated 1979 versoframed and under glassimage size 46cm x 61cm, overall size 55cm x 71cm Note: James Watt was born in Port Glasgow in 1931 to Alexander Watt and his wife Isabella (nee Hooper). His entire family, including his grandfather, and everybody he knew, were in shipbuilding. He was always passionate about boats. He believed he was very lucky. "I was in the right place at the right time. I caught the tail-end of the Clydeside shipbuilding boom in the 1950s. Shipyards had full order-books and the river teemed with craft of every sort. So I always had a subject”. His paintings are in a formidable array of collections – including those of HM The Queen and Prince Philip, The Princess Royal, The Arts Council, The Hunterian, Glasgow Museums, Paisley Museum & Art Gallery, IBM, Britoil, the Danish Embassy, Yarrow Shipbuilders, McKean Museum and Art Gallery, Clyde Shipping Co, the Royal Bank of Scotland and also the town council in the Faroes. Watt went to Glasgow School of Art for four years where he was taught by Ted Odling, Douglas Percy Bliss, and David Donaldson. In 1958 he was one of 13 founders of the Glasgow Group, an artists' co-operative which continues to this day. Irritated by the conformist, unadventurous policies of local exhibiting societies like the Royal Scottish Academy and the RGI, and at the dearth of commercial outlets in the city, they got together with other GSA students and graduates to exhibit at Glasgow’s then-beautiful McLellan Galleries. The Glasgow Group was the Transmission Gallery of its day. After two years National Service in the army, from 1955 to 1957 he became an art teacher, and a much-beloved one at that. He was noted for his kindness and good counsel, and one former student says of him: "I had pretty much zero talent but he sparked a lifelong love and interest in art." Another remembered “His was the fastest-moving Volvo down the school drive. He was some man." Later Watt became a member of the RGI and was elected a member of Society of Scottish Artists in 1965. In 1997 he received The Royal Bank of Scotland Award at the Glasgow Institute. He dedicated much of his life to recording the River Clyde and its industries, and his vast body of work forms a vital archive of the river. Greenock's McLean Museum and Art Gallery exhibition, The Lost Clyde: The Paintings of James Watt, was mounted to celebrate his 90th birthday. James was also the father of Alison Watt OBE FRSE RSA, one of Britain's best-known painters.
