A Scottish Basket-Hilted Broadsword Second Quarter Of The 18th Century With unusually broad tapering double-edged blade cut with three converging fullers over a third of its length over each side of the forte, a brass-inlaid running wolf mark beyond (some brass missing), iron guard of slender rounded bars involving fretted panels pierced with stylised hearts and circles, and with incised line borders, the side panels en suite and each with 'ram's horn' terminal pierced with a heart, fore-guards, scrolled wrist-guard, fluted bun-shaped pommel with compressed button, and spirally-grooved leather-covered wooden grip between iron ferrules (old rust patination and light pitting) 83.6 cm. blade Footnotes: Exhibited The Swords and the Sorrows, Culloden Commemorative Exhibition, Culloden, 16 April-20 September 1996 Literature The Swords and the Sorrows, exhibition catalogue, cat. no. 1:20, p. 32 (illustrated) This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
