A pair of King George VI limed-oak Coronation chairs, 1937 The limed-oak frame upholstered in faded blue velvet, trimmed with gold braid, the backrest embroidered with the GVI cypher, on chamfered square-section legs on spreading block feet, the underside stamped with maker's name 'W.Hands & Son', '1937', and the GVI cypher,, 48.5cm wide, 48cm deep, 86.5cm high (19in wide, 18 1/2in deep, 34in high). (2) Footnotes: The Coronation of His Majesty King George VI took place at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 12 May 1937. This date was originally selected for the coronation of his brother, Edward VIII. After Edward's abdication in December 1936 it was agreed that the coronation ceremony for George VI would remain on this day. Condition Report Later strengthening steel L-brackets to the top of back legs to one chair. With later screws through the back of the uprights. Joints and later screws to back blocks; slightly loose. Minor chips, scuffs and scratches consistent with age and use. Sun bleaching, staining and discolouration to the velvet upholstery. Wear and losses to braiding. Oak frame historically repolished.
