A Rare Pair Of Algerian 20-Bore Flintlock Holster Pistols And Powder Measure Late 18th/Early 19th Century The first with minor differences, each with three-stage barrel retained by an engraved silver band (one replaced) at the muzzle, part octagonal breeches decorated with designs of foliage, tangs (one broken) with silver ropework, lightly decorated flat bevelled Italian export locks each engraved 'D.B.', moulded hardwood full stocks inlaid with engraved silver foliate cagework (some old repairs) secured by pins and enclosing numerous drop-shaped and circular pieces of red coral (corallium rubrum), silver mounts comprising spurred faceted pommels each with domed cap, trigger-guards with foliate finials and reeded bows, turned ramrod-pipes (one replaced and one repaired), and later silver-capped horn-tipped ramrods, the powder-measure of silver-mounted tubular brass set with red coral at the top and engraved with foliage, steel measure faced in silver incised with graduations, and with silver suspension loop (3) 32.2 cm. barrels Footnotes: These pistols are part of a well-known group of firearms made mainly to be presented as diplomatic gifts during the reign of Hammuda ibn Ali, Bay of Tunis (1759-1814).
