A 15-Bore Flintlock Duelling Pistol By H.W. Mortimer Of London, Late 18th Century With rebrowned slightly swamped twist octagonal sighted barrel with gold-lined maker's oval on the top flat at the breech, engraved gold line and gold-lined touch-hole, foliate engraved tang with back-sight, flat bevelled detented lock signed in script and with part martial trophy on the stepped tail, engraved safety-catch (cock replaced), gold-lined pan, and roller bearing on a ramp on the steel-spring, figured half-stock (broken through beneath the tail of the lock and at the side-flat) with chequered rounded butt (small repair on one side at the tang), the pommel carved as a flower-head, reblued steel mounts including trigger-guard with pineapple finial and decorated with a martial trophy on the bow (engraving refreshed), silver barrel-bolt escutcheons and fore-end cap, adjustable set trigger, and later horn-tipped ramrod, London proof marks 25.5 cm. barrel Footnotes: Harvey Walklate Mortimer (1753-1819) was appointed Gunmaker to George III in 1783. He was at 89 Fleet Street between 1782 and 1799 and was Contractor to the East India Company from 1796 until 1806.
